UNIX Systems Laboratories, (USL) was originally organized as part of Bell Labs in 1989 and joined with the UNIX Software Operation, also a Bell Labs division, in 1990. It assumed responsibility for UNIX development and licensing activies. It then became a seperate, wholly owned subsidiary formed, owned and operated by AT&T, the parent company of Bell Labs.

In 1992 Novell purchased USL and all of the UNIX assets, including copyrights, trademarks and licensing contracts.

USL was involved in the USL v. BADi law suite initiated in 1992 and settled in 1994.
