Area code 582
Area code 582 will be the new area code for northwestern Pennsylvania, replacing area code 814, which stands to be divided. 814 is the only one of Pennsylvania's original four area codes that has not been split or overlaid.
The 582 area code will replace 814 throughout these counties: Erie, Crawford, Warren, Venango, Forest, Clarion, Jefferson, Elk, and McKean.
Parts of Armstrong, Clearfield, Indiana, and Mercer counties also will be switched to 582. Much of Clearfield and Indiana counties will retain 814; much of Armstrong and Mercer counties will continue in area code 724.
582 was originally planned to go into effect on February 1, 2012, but the exhaust date was pushed back.[1]
Following an announcement by third party area code relief planner Neustar that the projected exhaust date for the 814 area code was pushed back roughly two years (from the first quater of 2013 to the first quarter of 2015) the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC), in March 2011, voted 5-0 to move forward with the scheduling of hearings, but suspend the timeline for implementation of area code relief.[2]
The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) voted to revoke the 582 area code plan and it's implementation schedule on April 26, 2012, killing the issue until at least 2018.
