Parabola GNU/Linux-libre is a free software project which aims to provide a version of Arch Linux completely free with packages optimized for i686, x86_64 and mips64. Parable intends that its management tools and packages are simple. The goal is to provide you total control of your system with applications 100% free. Parabola GNU/Linux is listed by the Free Software Foundation as a completely free operating system [1].

The development focuses on the simplicity of the system, the community involvement in the development and delivery of the latest packages from free software. Its lightweight and simple design makes it easy to extend to any other type of system you want to build.

The social contract of Parabola GNU/Linux

The social contract of Parabola GNU/Linux is a commitment of the distribution with the libre software community in general and its users in particular. It is because of this that our social contract will always follow the philosophy of free knowledge. All the amendments to this social contract must be faithful to the spirit of the Free Software Movement.

  1. Parabola GNU/Linux is libre software: it will follow the GNU free system distribution guidelines, so it doesn't include or recommend proprietary software or documentation and it does not provide any type of support for their installation or execution. This includes: proprietary software, binary only firmware or binary blobs.
  2. Parabola GNU/Linux and other distributions: Parabola's objective is to support the free software movement so we only need to compete against nonfree software. Parabola will strive to support other free software projects as best it can and any information from our project will be available for anybody who needs it. That includes our packages and repositories.
  3. Parabola GNU/Linux and its community: our community is democratic in its essence, so the community is included whenever there is a need to take a decision. We encourage community participation in the development of the project.
  4. Parabola GNU/Linux and ArchLinux: Parabola is the free version of ArchLinux. We provide repositories and installation images without any nonfree software. We respect Arch's KISS philosophy (Keep It Simple, Stupid) and its developing process. In that sense, Parabola will always maintain retro compatibility with Arch so as to help free already working installations.

History

Parabola was originally an idea of the members from the IRC gNewSense channel in 2009. That same year, joined members of different communities of Arch, especially the Spanish language, and people from more countries has contributed much in the development and maintenance of software and documentation. Today, Parabola's community is dispersed internationally.

On May 20, 2011, Parabola distro was accepted as a completely free project by GNU, making it part of the the FSF list of free distributions.[2][3]

Differences with Arch Linux

The project is characterized by providing only 100% free software contained from the official Arch Linux repositories for architectures i686 and x86_84, besides providing free replacements when possible, as the Linux-libre kernel instead of Linux.

The filtering process removes around 400 software packages from repositories that don't are meet with the four freedoms software for each architecture.[4][5]

Since the beginning of 2011 is developing a distro version oriented for computers that use Loongson processor, a architecture derivative from MIPS of 64 bits. This development is carried out entirely by the community project.

Features

As in the main distribution, Parabola uses the same package manager Pacman, and also characterized as rolling release, that means that the distribution is constantly updated, so that users always have the latest version of the system.

There are two ways to obtain it, either installable ISO images [6] or migrating from one Arch Linux type system previously installed, changing the repositories list by Parabola.[7]

Most of their packages are compressed using the XZ, which uses the LZMA algorithm.
