Proposals, August 2011

Bony fish stubs

504 at the moment - not severely oversized but could stand paring. Tradition dictates separate tags for Scotland, England, Wales, etc., but I'm not sure that will help matters much. I'd suggest a by-century paring down, thus:

{{UK-painter-18thC-stub}} - 100 articles, according to CatScan
{{UK-painter-19thC-stub}} - 205 articles, according to CatScan
{{UK-painter-20thC-stub}} - 149 articles, according to CatScan

That should take care of most of 'em. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:45, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Golf competition stubs

Woodpecker stubs

Roman Catholic document stubs

Some more possible subcats for prehistoric reptiles

New European rapid transit stubs categories

Propose the following categories:

This should tidy up the category nicely. My questions are:

  1. Should we create a France category to house Category:Paris RER stubs and Category:Paris Métro stubs?
  2. Should we create a country template for categories that don't have country templates (i.e. {{Italy-metro-stub}} and a possible {{France-metro-stub}}; {{Spain-metro-stub}} is already proposed below)?

SeveroTC 10:39, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

  1. Yes, not to mention a Sweden category (for Category:Stockholm Metro stubs) and a Belgium category (for Category:Brussels Metro stubs).
  2. Definitely if there are any stubswhich should be tagged with them (that is, belong to the country but not to any of the cities with their own tags), probably not otherwise.
עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 17:09, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
Hmm, can't say I see the point in a Sweden or Belgium category (or Norwegian for the existing Category:Oslo Metro stubs or Czech for Category:Prague Metro stubs) as there wouldn't be any other articles to go in them. Of articles currently tagged with {{Europe-metro-stub}}, 10 are for France but 0 are for Italy. SeveroTC 11:38, 26 August 2011 (UTC) (+ 17:04, 26 August 2011 (UTC))
Agree with all the templates and ctegories by city, as for the by country ones I would say templates yes but categories only if there are a few articles using the template. Waacstats (talk) 08:14, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
Support all, per Waacstaats. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 14:53, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

So is that a yes to Category:French rapid transit stubs and {{France-metro-stub}} but a no to Sweden, Belgium, Norway and Czech Republic categories (as templates wouldn't be used in any articles)? SeveroTC 07:23, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

No templates, certainly, but I don't see any reason why there shouldn't be parent-only cats, to match the rest of the pattern. Grutness...wha? 01:54, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Prehistoric archosaur stubs

Alternate ENGVAR versions of stub tags

Inoticed that some articles have ENGVARproblematic stub tags on them. For example, American Public Transportation Association (American English), has a stub tag which says "This article about transport is a stub" (transcluded from {{transport-stub}}). Since American English uses "transportation", not "transport", this is a problem. My solution is to do what was done with {{color-stub}} - make the main template accept parameters which allow for ENGVAR forks; create these fork templates at the ENGVAR-appropriate names (for example, {{transportation-stub}} - just like we have {{colour-stub}}); and then choose which template to use for each article based on the article and ENGVAR. Note that this won't affect any subsequent renaming of stub categories; this will just need to be done at the main stub tag page. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 06:49, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

Sounds reasonable, though it will make for quite a few redirects! Theatre/Theater is another case that could probably use this. Grutness...wha? 00:46, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
Support - as an American (and therefore a polluter of y'all's English (see what I did there?)) I think this would be most useful. I'm in favor of stub tag redirects generally, come to that. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 14:54, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

not exceptionally large but the following may help with nationality parent cats

{{Germany-equestrian-bio-stub}} - Category:German equestrian biography stubs
{{US-equestrian-bio-stub}} - Category:American equestrian biography stubs
{{UK-equestrian-bio-stub}} - Category:British equestrian biography stubs

cats iff templates reach 60 which a quick scan would suggest is only going to be Germany at the moment. Waacstats (talk) 21:36, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

In need of a tidy up but {{US-baseball-umpire-stub}} and Category:American baseball umpire stubs would definitely help with cutting the size back down. Waacstats (talk) 21:36, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

Support - I went ahead and fixed the capitalization, too, for completeness' sake. :-) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 14:54, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

I've proposed renaming this category at WP:SFD to either Category:Cooking utensil stubs or Category:Kitchenware stubs, the names of its two possible parents. But the category's a bit of a mish-mash, since it also contains drinkware, which should reall be at its own loccation. As such, I'd like to propose:

This would also go a long way towards making the currently woefully undersized Category:Bartending stubs more viable (as it would be a natural subcat for it). Grutness...wha? 04:17, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

Just templates for now, categories upon the size of the templates whether to go system based or country based:

I also propose at this time a {{Europe-metro-stub}} to clear up all over European systems into one cat.

Support. I'd go with ParisRER-metro-stub, and I think you're right about changing the foo-U-bahn-stubs to Ubahn. Grutness...wha? 00:17, 13 August 2011 (UTC)
S-Bahn amended to SBahn; I will take the existing U-Bahn ones to SFD. SeveroTC 07:14, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

I'm thinking also of an {{SBahn-stub}} and a {{UBahn-stub}} as redirects to {{Europe-metro-stub}}. SeveroTC 06:28, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

Update to add a {{Spain-metro-stub}} in place of the Valencia template - there are some new systems in Spain which could see some article growth and it's looking like a country level stub category so add the country-level template, which deprecated the need for the Valencia one. SeveroTC 16:55, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

European railway station stubs 2

This should deal with this category, at least on a country level, for a time:

Well into three figures, and many of them unique to NZ - would match the similar split for Australia, and would ease the pressure which is slowly growing on the (approaching 600-stub) Category:New Zealand stubs. Grutness...wha? 02:34, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

Support, not a bad idea. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:35, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

Probably speediable - there's at least 30 of these, stubbed with all sorts of unlikely templates - possibly far more. May even be enough for a separate Category:New Zealand road stubs, though at the moment it looks like it won't quite get there. Grutness...wha? 06:47, 7 August 2011 (UTC)

Support whatever you come up with - I trust you. :-) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:35, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
In that case, how about {{Antarctica-footyclub-stub}}? ;) (thanks for the compliment, BTW) Grutness...wha? 01:15, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
Why not? We have Vatican national football team...nothing would surprise me any more. (You're most welcome - 'tis well-deserved indeed.) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 15:25, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

Another oversized category, creeping towards the 1000 mark. The following \may be useful potential splits:

Just realised that to keep these consistent with other templates it should be "psych", not "psychology" in each case. I've changed the proposal above, and will leave this another couple of days in casr there are any objections. Grutness...wha? 08:02, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

Split of Protein stubs

This is one for a more scientificsally minded stub-sorter than me, but Category:Protein stubs is currently one of the biggest oversized categories at 1150 stubs. It seems to me that it could be halved by dividing out the following two subtypes of proteins:

Any thoughts? Grutness...wha? 01:13, 7 August 2011 (UTC)

I'm not very scienticsally minded either and I can't find perm cats for these so not to sure at the moment. Waacstats (talk) 13:43, 7 August 2011 (UTC)
It's hard to type with a cat on your lap :) Yeah, I couldn't find permcats either (apart from the one on my lap)... but protein states that this is the main way that proteins are divided up. Perhaps someone with some knowledge of the area should see whether permcats are a good idea there. Unfortunately, chemistry is not my forte. Grutness...wha? 00:36, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

A slightly unusual way to split plants, but judging by the first page of the oversized Category:Western Australia stubs, this would be very useful indeed, taking some 700 of the 950 stubs in the category. And WA is a unique ecosystem within Australia, owing to the desert between it and the east. Grutness...wha? 10:14, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

Currently stands at 539. Not over-oversized, but it's getting there, and I think it would be a good idea to try and get it under control. CatScan reveals the following, along the lines of Italian painter stubs:

CatScan is no longer cooperating, but there may be more viable; I'll check again later and add a note to that effect. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:13, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

Archery stubs

Propose Category:Archery stubs, {{archery-stub}} (60) and {{archery-competition-stub}} (30). Category:Archery biography stubs already exists as a natural subcat. SeveroTC 15:37, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

Sport event stubs - the easy ones

Having scratched the surface, I realised that there is a lot of undersorting here. So here's part one - the easy sports:

Numbers are rounded from CatScan. Categories if 60-threshold is met and it doesn't decimate the parent category. If no category, upmerged to Category:Sports event stubs and the respective sport's stub category. SeveroTC 15:24, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
