Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals/Archive/2011/December
Proposals, December 2011
Please check how many articles qualify for a stub type before proposing it.
If (after approval) you create a stub type, please be sure to add it to the list of stub types. This page will be archived in its entirety once all discussions have been closed; there is no need to move them to another page.
US-comics-artist-stub
I would like to create a {{US-comics-artist-stub}}, in order to properly sort articles for American comic book artists. There are many that fall into more than one stub category, and this stub template would eliminate the need to place multiple stub tags on the same article. The corresponding Category:American comics artist stubs, would easily be populated by articles currently marked with {{comics-artist-stub}} (159 articles, most of which are Americans) and {{US-comics-creator-stub}} (226 articles, many that are strictly artists). Split/templates for Category:Auto racing biography stubs
Non-European countries, the following two categories look viable:
- Category:Canadian auto racing biography stubs ({{Canada-autoracing-bio-stub}} 74)
- Category:Japanese auto racing biography stubs ({{Japan-autoracing-bio-stub}} 63)
The following templates (double upmerged to national sportspeople bio stubs cat) also look viable, I'll leave categories for now though and come back if they nudge 60:
- {{Argentina-autoracing-bio-stub}} (43)
- {{Australia-autoracing-bio-stub}} (49)
- {{Brazil-autoracing-bio-stub}} (43)
- {{Mexico-autoracing-bio-stub}} (25)
- {{NewZealand-autoracing-bio-stub}} (21)
- {{SouthAfrica-autoracing-bio-stub}} (22)
As below, the category is already split by nationality so all speediable S2. SeveroTC 13:40, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
Split of Category:Rallying biography stubs

General request for geologic period stub types
I was hoping no one would object to me creating a stub type for each different geologic period (eg Triassic-stub, Jurassic-stub, Cretaceous-stub). I stopped counting how many articles would be in the Triassic stub type at about 200. Each other period can be expected to have several hundred members. Abyssal (talk) 22:08, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
- Triassic has 551 stubs, Jurassic has 628, Cretaceous has over 1000. Looking farther back, the Permian has 350. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 09:20, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
- I don't see why not (at {{Jurassic-stub}}, Category:Jurassic stubs etc) with cats iff 60 (which looks definite). What category would Category:Jurassic stubs etc be placed into? SeveroTC 22:31, 27 December 2011 (UTC)
- Paleontology stubs. Abyssal (talk) 05:21, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
Maths Stubs sub-sub-categories
Several of the subcategories of {{math-stub}} have gotten quite large, especially since there is plenty more in the parent category still to sort. I've done some counts (listed on my user page), and it looks like:
- {{algebra-stub}} (~400) could easily be subdivided in {{algebra-abstract-stub}} (~250) and {{algebra-linear-stub}} (~70). {{algebra-abstract-stub}} could then further be split into {{algebra-group-stub}} with ~150 articles part of the Group theory category, or maybe even further.
- {{geometry-stub}} has over 600 articles, over a hundred each of which could be in {{geometry-diff-stub}} or {{geometry-elementary-stub}}
- It would be good to sort out the stubs not directly on maths from {{math-stub}} - There are already sub-types for mathematicians, literature, and journals, but there are ~40 articles in {{math-stub}} which are organisations, awards, programs or conferences. I can't think of a category name, but I'd like to collect these together, possibly with the literature stubs as a child of this.
- {{crypto-stub}} has about 50 people in it. Should these go into a new {{crypto-bio}} or be sorted into the {{mathematician-stub}} tree? --Qetuth (talk) 03:18, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
- (almost forgot) {{knot-theory-stub}} as a subcategory of {{topology-stub}} (~240). There are at least 50 knot-theory stubs, most in topology stub, but a few incorrectly added to {{knot-stub}} --Qetuth (talk) 03:39, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
- This all looks good, nice work :) My comments are:
- I would name most of the templates in the opposite order, so {{abstract-algebra-stub}}, {{linear-algebra-stub}}, {{group-algebra-stub}}, {{differential-geometry-stub}} (diff is surely ambiguous?), {{elementary-geometry-stub}}.
- {{crypto-bio-stub}} sounds like a good idea, with a category if exceeding 60 articles. Should it also be upmeged to Category:Computer scientist stubs?
- They almost all follow perm cats, so the stub cats should be named in the format [Perm cat stubs].
- SeveroTC 15:38, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
- I was following the lead of stubs like {{mathapplied-stub}} and {{mathanalysis-stub}}, but they definitely sound better the right way around to match the content. Would {{group-theory-stub}} be a better name for the Group theory stubs than the other suggestions then? (ie, is it considered better to have a clear link to it's parent stub, or to its topic category?)
- And most cryptographers in my experience identify as computer scientists not mathematicians, so I like that idea too. --Qetuth (talk) 16:27, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
- I don't quite follow about group theory. "Theory" stubs in general are either at for example {{gametheory-stub}} (all one word) or {{music-theory-stub}} (two words). It maybe better to go with {tl|knottheory-stub}} because otherwise it could be seen to be a theory of knots... I will also look at taking {{mathapplied-stub}} and {{mathanalysis-stub}} to WP:SFD because they should use the -math- stem. SeveroTC 10:38, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry if I was unclear. What I meant was: Group theory is the name of the field of study, a subfield of Abstract Algebra. So if you purely use the name Group theory for the stubs, as is done with the actual categories, the connection to either Abstract Algebra or to Maths isn't clear from just the name, and I wondered if that was something to be avoided where possible. But I think {{grouptheory-stub}} and {{knottheory-stub}} are probably the best names for those two stub types regardless - it matches the category/topic name but doesn't make them look a subset of 'group' or 'knot'. Actually in the whole tree of 33 subcateogries of "math-stub", only one starts with "math-" although as you said a few more should ({{mathlogic-stub}} and {{mathematics-lit-stub}} are two more). --Qetuth (talk) 13:04, 23 December 2011 (UTC)

Marvel Comics superhero stub
I would like to create a stub {{Marvel-hero-stub}}, which would place articles into Category:Marvel Comics superhero stubs. This would tie in with the current stub categories for {{Marvel-title-stub}} and {{Marvel-villain-stub}}. This new stub class would be easily populated, as most of the articles in Category:Marvel Comics stubs are about superheroes, and quite a number of the articles in Category:Marvel Comics superheroes are stubs. Fortdj33 (talk) 02:52, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
- Something grates in me about this: in the first place we probably would have been better with a {{Marvel-char-stub}} - although the numbers probably support separate hero and villain cats. That said, the -hero- stem is as good as -villain- stem and the numbers probably support it (though don't build the cat until the template is used 60 times) so I can support it. SeveroTC 18:49, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
- While I can see the initial advantage of having a {{Marvel-char-stub}}, I'm not sure that it wouldn't eventually need to be divided into sub categories anyway. There are over 1,000 articles in Category:Marvel Comics superheroes, and a couple hundred of them are stubs. Therefore, if the superhero stubs from Category:Marvel Comics stubs are added in, Category:Marvel Comics superhero stubs would be similar to Category:Marvel Comics supervillain stubs, which currently has 354 articles in it. I would be OK with {{Marvel-villain-stub}} being renamed to {{Marvel-char-stub}}, and then all the character stub articles being added to Category:Marvel Comics character stubs, but that will make for one large category, with no distinction between superheroes and supervillains. Fortdj33 (talk) 21:22, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
- Are there any characters apart from heroes and villains? If not, I don't really see the point in a {{Marvel-char-stub}} as the heroes and villains cats won't exactly be too small. SeveroTC 21:41, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
- Of course, comics books have "other characters". These are known as supporting characters. In the Spider-Man comics alone, examples are: Uncle Ben, Aunt May, J. Jonah Jameson, and Mary Jane Watson, although none of these would classify as stubs. Stub examples: Lee Forrester, Christian Frost, and Dexter Bennett.
- I went ahead and created the new stub tag for superheroes, and have started to populate the associated category, by updating stubs from Category:Marvel Comics stubs and Category:Marvel Comics superheroes. As far as the other characters apart from heroes and villains go, I don't believe that there are enough articles to warrant a {{Marvel-char-stub}}, so they can just remain in the generic Marvel stubs category for now.
