Offshore Standard DNV-OS-D203 - Integrated Software Dependent Systems

"Integrated Software Dependent Systems" is a systems and software verifications and classification method defined by the Offshore Standard DNV-OS-D203, created by DNV (Det Norske Veritas) [1].

DNV is an independent foundation with the purpose of safeguarding life, property, and the environment. Their history goes back to 1864, when the foundation was established in Norway to inspect and evaluate the technical condition of Norwegian merchant vessels.

DNV is the first class society that has developed a verification methodology for advanced control systems and software. This ISDS methodology was first published in 2008, and has been applied by several oil-companies, equipment suppliers, ship- and rig-owners. The ISDS methodology is formulated in the documents RP-D201 and OS-D203.

DNV’s ISDS standard focuses on how to set up and run a project and how to develop quality assurance processes that will last the lifetime of the unit (ship, rig etc.). It provides a well-defined framework for working systematically to achieve quality and performance assurance with software dependent systems. The process typically starts when owners are specifying their requirements, either for a newbuilding or an enhancement to an existing system. In collaboration with DNV specialists, the owner can assess suppliers to ensure they have the pre-requisites for delivering good quality software. Focus is placed on the software integration service providers and roles and responsibilities are defined for all parties involved. Methodologies are then put in place to ensure that relationships run smoothly. As this aspect of newbuilding is not dictated by classification society rules, DNV’s methodology can also be applied to vessels outside their class.

The DNV ISDS methodolgy has been developed starting with best industry practices from aerospace, telcom and automotive industries, and adapting the requirements to fit the offshore and maritime domains.
