In communications and information processing, encoding is the process by which a source (object) converts a recording format into a secuence of symbols of a certain predefined length, which is then stored or sent to a receiver (observer), such as a data processing system.

In communications and information processing, decoding is the process of converting message data, which has been sent by a source, into information understandable by a receiver.
