Established as part of the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004, Local Development Documents are produced by Local Authorities together with Supplementary Planning Documents to comprise the Local Development Framework. Their content and the timetable for their production, is set out in the Local Development Scheme (LDS).

The Local Development Documents must (taken as a whole) set out the authority's policies (however expressed) relating to the development and use of land in their area.
