Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent is the fourth installment in the Splinter Cell series of video games developed and published by Ubisoft. The series, created by American author Tom Clancy, follows the character Sam Fisher, a "Splinter Cell" employed by a black-ops division of the National Security Agency, dubbed Third Echelon.

Template:Spoiler The game is set shortly after the events of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. While on a mission, Sam learns that his daughter, Sarah, has been killed by a drunk driver. Overcome with depression, he is unable to concentrate on the operation and is pulled out by his superior, Colonel Irving Lambert. After many months, the broken Sam Fisher begs for another mission to distract himself from his grief. Lambert reluctantly agrees and offers him a mission as an NOC (Nonofficial cover) agent. These are agents comprised of CIA and NSA agents who infiltrate organised crime, and are used for HUMINT purposes. As with similar organisations, the US Government denies any involvement. Sam becomes a notorious criminal by staging many bank robberies and a mock body count - a scheme set by the NSA to explore the motivations of a domestic terrorist group known as John Brown's Army (JBA). Sam finally surrenders after a three day Hostage crisis and is sent to Ellsworth Prison. He is thrown into the same cell as a JBA member, named Jamie Washington, and with his cooperation, they break out of prison. [1].

Once the two escaped, Jamie offered Sam an invitation into the JBA. Sam accepted. As part of the JBA, Sam must complete objectives to gain their trust as well as complete NSA objectives. The decisions he will have to make will be increasingly difficult as you progress through the game. Will you kill an innocent hostage and save millions? Gain the JBA's trust but fail an NSA objective?

At this time, Double Agent is due to be released sometime in September 2006.

Features

Ubisoft Montreal will be reusing the SCX(Unreal based Chaos Theory engine)engine to create Splinter Cell: Double Agent for Xbox, PS2 and PSP. Ubisoft Shanghai will be developing the game for the Xbox 360 and the PC using a multi-threaded version of the Chaos Theory engine. Ubisoft Annecy, who are the developers of Splinter Cell's award winning multiplayer mode (also known as the Versus Mode) will be responsible for the next "Generation Online Experience" (Spies VS Mercenaries & Spies VS Spies). The official teaser website [2] provides a few scant details about the game, including:

  • For the first time, Sam will be introduced to a love interest, a woman known as Enrica Villablanca, a member of the JBA
  • The Xbox 360 version will be very similar to the PC Version
  • Each platform's version will contain exclusive material
  • Play as a Double Agent and use real Double Agent Techniques
  • Your Gameplay decides how the Storyline is going to unfold (multiple Storylines) and what kind of Equipment is at your disposal
  • No Taboos this time - even Main Characters from the Splinter Cell Series could die caused by your decisions
  • Dual Missions (JBA / NSA)

Xbox and Playstation 2 Extras: Additional single-player mission with alternate ending, 15 co-op missions playable offline, LAN, and 8 minutes of additional cinematics.

Xbox 360 and PC Extras: Two additional alternate single-player missions, nine all-new merged versus and co-op maps, and new underwater and sandstorm combat.
