Inelastic neutron scattering
Appearance
In an inelastic neutron scattering experiment, neutrons impinge upon a specimen, and exit the specimen with either a gain or a loss of kinetic energy. By invoking conservation laws, the experimentalist endeavors to determine the momentum and energy transferred to the sample. Common applications of the technique are to studies of vibrational, magnetic, crystal field, and other elementary excitations in condensed matter.
