Remote racking systems
Definition:
A remote racking system is a safe alternative to manually racking circuit breakers, which reduces the requirement for service personnel to wear a full-body arc flash hazard suit for protection.
Remote racking systems replace the manual racking operation and remove the operating personnel from manual contact with the circuit breaker and out of harms way.
A circuit breaker is an automatically operated electrical switch designed to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by overload or short circuit.
By permitting the automatic racking of the circuit breaker from a remote location, the remote racking systems move service personnel outside the arc flash protection boundary, thus reducing the need for a full-body arc flash hazard suit. An arc flash is a type of electrical explosion that results from a low connection to ground or another voltage phase in an electrical system.
When the remote racking system is used in conjunction with the remote switch operator, the user can also operate, trip, and close release the circuit breaker from a safe distance.
A remote switch operator is used to remotely operate various types and styles of circuit breakers and controls.
How it works
A remote racking system helps people operating the circuit breaker to stand at a safer distance away when racking and un-racking the unit. Distance is key when operating with circuit breakers since the arc flash is dangerous.
There are several designs on the market right now of these but most include either a wired/wireless remote, that operates the remote racking system. These distances vary by which product you choose. Also the style and size will also be a factor when you decide which remote racking system to get since some are larger than others.
