These are the instructions for maintaining the Photography Workshop Top 4 page, and any experienced editor is welcome to help out. There are four easy steps to maintaining the Top 4 page:

  1. Finding four new images
  2. Adding the new images into the Top 4 gallery
  3. Archiving the old images
  4. Updating the log of users who have completed Top 4 requests

Creating seamless updates

To create a seamless transition between old and new Top 4 batches, first locate four images. Each image can be temporarily kept in separate browser windows or in tabs. Images may be suggested on the project's discussion page, or they can be found by several other means:

  1. Commons Images for cleanup
  2. Wikipedia Images for cleanup
  3. The GLAMorous tool, which can search specific categories and list images in order of use. Some quick links:
GLAMorous Category Searches
Images with watermarks Files needing restoration Images with non-free frames Images with opaque backgrounds Underexposed images
  1. If an image you are adding is unfree, please familiarize yourself with the {{Gl request}} template documentation on proper procedure.

Note: While there are no official prerequisites for what images can be placed in the Top 4, please only add images that are being used in at least one article. Unused images have the lowest priority for cleanup.

Adding the new Top 4 batch

The new four images will be inserted into the Top 4, but the old images must not be overwritten yet.

  1. Click "edit" on the Top 4 page (direct link)
  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the edit window, where you can find the following gallery code. Copy the gallery code:
<gallery widths="160px">
<!-- ---------------REQUESTS START HERE--------------- -->

<!-- File One -->
|{{Gl request|request=Remove watermark |taken by= |new file=}}

<!-- File Two -->
|{{Gl request|request=Remove watermark |taken by= |new file=}}

<!-- File Three -->
|{{Gl request|request=Remove watermark |taken by= |new file=}}

<!-- File Four -->
|{{Gl request|request=Remove watermark |taken by= |new file=}}

<!-- ---------------REQUESTS END HERE--------------- -->
</gallery>
  1. Scroll back to the top of the edit window and insert (paste) the new gallery code above the old gallery code, immediately below the <center> tag.
  2. Now return to your pre-chosen images. Copy the first file name (including the "File:" prefix) and paste it in front of the File One {{Gl request}} template.
  3. Update the request= parameter to reflect the work needed to be done. The result should look like this:
<!-- File One -->
File:Example image.jpg|{{Gl request|request=Remove watermark |taken by= |new file=}}
  1. Update the other three files.
  2. When this is done, the old image batch must be removed and archived. Copy the old gallery code, then delete it from the edit window. The new gallery should be nestled between the <center> and </center> tags.
  3. Type "New Top 4" in the edit summary, and save page!

Archiving previous Top 4

The archives are located here and are listed by year.

  1. Open the proper archive, click "edit", and scroll to the very bottom.
  2. Beneath the last gallery, type the date (it may span several days) in bold, and paste the gallery code beneath the date. To save page bytes and loading time, please remove all the <!-- --> comments from the gallery code.
  3. Update the edit summary, and click save page! Once the page has refreshed, scroll down to the newly saved gallery and make note of the editors' names who fulfilled the Top 4 requests.

Updating the users log

A log is kept of every editor who contributes to the Top 4. The log may be found here. There is also a link to it on the main Top 4 page, in the description.

  1. Open the edit window for the log, and copy the "updated by" sentence as instructed. Paste this sentence over the old "updated by" sentence (including any signature code).
  2. Update the user edit count as needed. Any new user names must be added—please keep the list alphabetized.
  3. Type "updated" in the edit summary, and click save page!

You've completed the Top 4 maintenance. Thank you for your help!
