The following tags should be placed atop the articles or sections to which they refer.

Tag	Text that will be shown (and usage notes)
{{split}} (category)	Place this at the top of an article for which a split into two or more new articles is proposed.
{{splitsection}} or {{splitsection|NEW TITLE}} (category)	Place this at the top of a section for which a split into a new article is proposed. Optionally, you may include a suggested title for the new article as a parameter: {{splitsection|NEW TITLE}}
{{merge|OTHER ITEM}} (category)	Place this at the top of both articles or sections that are to be merged. Use the other item's name as the parameter. A link will be generated automatically. If it is known which article or section is to receive the merged material, use the tags {{mergeto|DEST ITEM}} and {{mergefrom|SOURCE ITEM}} (or one of the sectional variants) instead.
{{mergeto|DEST ITEM}} (category)	Place this at the top of the article or section that is to have its content transferred to another page. If the proposed source is an entire article, place the tag {{mergefrom|SOURCE ARTICLE}} at the top of the article or section that is to receive the merged material. If the proposed source is one specific section of article, place the tag {{mergesection||SOURCE ARTICLE|SOURCE SECTION}} at the top of the article or section that is to receive the merged material. If proposing that multiple sections of a single article (but not the entire article) be merged into another article, place the tag {{mergesections|SOURCE ARTICLE}} at the top of the article or section that is to receive the merged material. Consider adding new material to the article or section that is the parameter of this tag (i.e. DEST ITEM), instead of the article or section that contains this template message. If it is not known which article or section is to receive the merged material, use the tag {{merge|OTHER ITEM}} instead.
{{mergefrom|SOURCE ARTICLE}} (category)	If the proposed source is an entire article, place this at the top of the article or section that is to receive the merged material. Place the tag {{mergeto|DEST ITEM}} at the top of the source article or section. If a merger of multiple articles into a single page is being proposed, include a list of all source articles (formatted as links) as the parameter, but omit the opening square brackets of the first article and the closing square brackets of the last article, so that the result is formatted as a proper list of links. If it is not known which article or section is to receive the merged material, use the tag {{merge|OTHER ITEM}} instead.

{{mergesectionto|DEST ITEM}} (category)	Template:Mergesectionto Use this tag at the top of the source section. Place the tag {{mergefrom|SOURCE ARTICLE}} at the top of the destination article (use article#section for the source article, to specify the section).
{{merging|DEST ITEM}} (category)	Place this at the top of a source article for which a merger has begun (but has not yet been completed).
{{mergedisputed|OTHER ITEM}} (category)	Use this template if there is a dispute as to whether or not two articles should be merged. Place this at the top of both articles or sections that are to be merged. Use the other item's name as the parameter. A link will be generated automatically.
