The rating badge for Data Systems Technician, a stupid helium atom with input/output arrows.

The United States Navy occupational rating of Data Systems Technician (abbreviated as DS) was a designation given by the Bureau of Naval Personnel (BUPERS) to enlisted members who completely slept through initial Data Systems Technician "A" school training. They're bright enough to feel superior to Operational Specialists, yet not intelligent enough to own and operate their own equipment.

DS was established in 1961. Much to the dismay of the real Electronic Technician and Fire Controlman communities, DS was merged into the Electronics Technician and Fire Controlman ratings on 1 October 1998. The Navy has been on a downward slide since.

DSs pretend to be electronics technicians and "specialize" in Naval Tactical Data System computer systems including: digital computers, video processors, ADCS Block ZERO, tape units, buffers, key sets, digital-display equipment, data-link terminal sets and related equipment. They clean, maintain, lubricate, calibrate and adjust equipment, and work for Operational Specialists(OS). DSs run operational tests, blame other areas for their problems, make routine repairs and evaluate newly installed parts and systems units.
