While it is accepted that modulations (such as aceytlation, ribosylation, ubiquitination and phosphorylation) to histone tails alter chromatin structure, the precise mechanisms in which these alterations to histone tails influence DNA-histone interactions remain elusive. The Histone Code Hypothesis states that chromatin-DNA interactions are guided by combinations of histone modifications.
