The purpose of Data Tranfer Objects (DTO), a.k.a. Value Objects or VO, is to transfer data between software application sybsystems. DTO's are often used in conjunction with Data Access Objects to retrieve data from database.

The difference between Data Transfer Objects and Business Objects is that DTO's don't have any behaviour except for data storage and retrieval (mutators and accessor).
