The Local Government Information Unit (LGiU) is a British independent think tank and registered charity (Reg. No. 1113495). Established in 1983 as a membership organisation for UK local authorities, the LGiU provides policy advice, learning and development programmes, events and conferences, consultancy and other resources to its members and other organisations.

The Chief Executive of the LGIU is Andy Sawford. The Chair of the LGiU Board is Cllr David Wilcox. The LGiU currently has around 150 local authority members and a range of associate members and partner organisations.

Mission

The LGiU’s mission is to strengthen local democracy to put citizens in control of their own lives, communities and local services. It works with local councils and other public services providers, along with a wider network of public, private and third sector organisations.

The LGiU has been an advocate of Localism in the United Kingdom.

c’llr Magazine

The LGiU also publishes the monthly c’llr magazine. The magazine also runs the annual C’llr Achievement Awards.

Events

The LGiU hosts a number of events, seminars and conference programmes throughout the year.
