Workforce Development Institute (WDI), based in Albany, New York,with statewide and regional capacity,is a non-profit organization that collects workforce intelligence, analysizes regional economic trends, provides education and training grants to businesses and unions in order to strengthen the skills of workers across New York. With offices in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Troy, Newburgh, Utica, Massena, and Long Island, WDI partners with state and local government, workforce investment boards, environmentalists and is a leader in developing the workforce in New York State.
Mission
"Our mission is to improve the lives of working families across New York State by gathering workforce intelligence that is used to develop programs in education andn training, economic development, family support, disabled and dislocated workerrs services and cultural enrichment."
History
WDI was founded by Ed Murphy, in partnership with the NYS AFL-CIO and has access to the knowledge and experience of New York's 2.4 million unionized workers. It has a strategic network across the state and services aligned with Area Labor Federations.
Programs
Workforce Intelligence: WDI has a significant presence in every major region across New York State. As such, WDI provides funds to strenthen local economic capacity, shares its knowledge in the form of economic and public policy research.
Childcare Subsidy: In the Capital Region and Oneida County, WDI provides childcare subsidy assistance to working families. WDI facilitates the application process and helps families locate appropriate and safe child care providers.
Education and Training: WDI provides gap funding, when appropriate, to train and educate New York's workforce. The organization has funded over 60,000 hours of instruction to over 33,000 dislocated workers, union members, and their families.
Green Jobs: WDI is a leader in training related to green jobs. It established the NYS Apollo Alliance, bringing business, government, organized labor, environmentalists, social justice advocates and educators together to develop consensus strategies related to energy concerns, green jobs and opportunities.
Art of Labor: WDI sponsors cultural workshops that create positive images of workers across New York State. After completing photography, writing and commuications courses, participants display their photographs and share their stories in venues around the state.
Vocational Services: WDI collaborates with community colleges to provide specialized education and training to disabled individuals.
