Peter MacDonald (computer programmer)
Peter MacDonald co-developed early features [1] [2] of the Linux kernel, including shared libraries, pseudo-ttys, the select call and virtual consoles. He is also the creator of SLS, widely regarded as the first Linux distribution. He is also creator of the Tcl web browser BrowseX (now defunct).
Biography
Peter Charles MacDonald was born and raised in Victoria, British Columbia in 1957. He graduated from the Computer Science program of the University of Victoria with a BSc (1989) and MSc (1996, masters thesis: Decomposing the Linux Kernel into Dynamically Loadable Modules).
He has worked for IBM, Itron, MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates, the Department of National Defence (Canada), Bell-Northern Research, Microtel Pacific Research, and others. He also spent 10 years as a systems analyst within the British Columbia provincial government, and continues to work in the areas of Linux, Tcl, and Web development and research.
