Overview
In-text cite link labels can be customized by using a group name that calls a a custom label page. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style (footnotes)/Cite link labels for details.
Issues and resolution
The error message will be displayed if:
- The number of references using the group name exceeds the number of labels
- The labels were defined without a space separating each label
Bugs
- Template:Bug
- The error message at MediaWiki:Cite error no link label group gets classed as a reference, so you can't use a wikilink in the message to link to a help page
- The reference list is an ordered list and uses numbers that don't match the in-text cite labels
