Wikipedia:WikiProject Numismatics/Categories
Proposed update to the existing category structure for articles in Wikipedia:WikiProject Numismatics. For questions/discussion, please use the talk page, or simply update this structure. Once consensus is reached, and categories changed, this page will be updated to show the (new) existing structure with descriptions of each category for future reference. Descriptions below currently focus on the difference between the current structure and the proposed structure.
Category Structure
All of the following categories belong in the Numismatics WikiProject. They are all subcategories of Category:Money. All categories not listed here, including other subcategories of Money, do not belong in the WikiProject.
- Category:Currency.
- Category:Numismatics. Moved from a subcategory of Category:Money, since Numismatics is the study of currency, not money. Also, many articles need to be removed from this category. It should be reserved specifically for articles relating to the study of currency, not articles relating to currency. So, this would be for famous numismatists, collectors' clubs, collectors' magazines/resources, etc. From the Numismatics infobox, Terminology, Coinage, Coin collecting.
- Category:Currency production. Articles about producing coins and paper money. If someone wanted to add information about which metals are used to make coins and why, it would go here.
- Category:Mints. Articles about mints.
- Category:United States Mint. Articles about the United States Mint and its branch mints.
- Category:Directors of the United States Mint. Directors are in charge of the operations of the mint (I'm guessing -- I've posted to Talk:United States Mint to see if someone can fill me in).
- Category:United States Mint engravers. Engravers of the United States Mint. Engravers design the coins. (I'm not sure if that's all they do, see previous).
- Category:Directors of the United States Mint. Directors are in charge of the operations of the mint (I'm guessing -- I've posted to Talk:United States Mint to see if someone can fill me in).
- Category:United States Mint. Articles about the United States Mint and its branch mints.
- Category:Currency designers.
- Category:Currency production methods. Articles relating to how currency is produced.
- Category:Mints. Articles about mints.
- Category:Coins (label). A labelling category, for articles about coins.
- Category:Banknotes (label). A labelling category, for articles about banknotes.
- Category:Community currencies.
- Category:Exonumia. All forms of non-money that are used as money or similar to money are included here.
- Category:Fictional currencies.
- Category:Official currencies. Currencies that have been used officially. These have often been legal tender, but that has a very specific legal definition which is sometimes not appropriate. These may be for a country or monetary union.
- Category:Modern currencies. All modern currencies (as opposed to medieval or ancient).
- Category:Circulating currencies (label). All currently circulating currencies.
- Category:Modern obsolete currencies (label). All modern currencies which no longer circulate
- Category:Monetary unions (label). Articles about monetary unions and their currencies. If it is deemed useful, a subcategory, Category:Monetary union currencies could be created.
- Category:Commemorative currencies (label). Modern commemorative currencies (are commemorative banknotes produced? Or should this be commemorative coins?)
- Category:Currencies of Africa
- Category:Currencies of the Americas
- Category:Currencies of Argentina
- Category:Currencies of Brazil
- Category:Currencies of Canada
- Category:Currencies of the United States
- Category:Banknotes of the United States
- Category:Modern obsolete currencies of the United States. Moved from Category:Historical currencies of the United States.

- Category:Commemorative coins of the United States. Moved from Category:United States commemorative coins.
- Category:Currencies of Asia and the Pacific
- Category:Currencies of Hong Kong
- Category:Currencies of Singapore
- Category:Rupee. Deleted. Replace with a page linking to all rupees (similar to Franc).
- Category:Currencies of Europe
- Category:Currencies of the United Kingdom. This was Category:British money, and so no longer applies to Jersey, Guernsey, and Isle of Man. If that is a problem, we can consider another name.
- Category:Coins of the United Kingdom. Moved from Category:British coinage. See above
- Category:Currencies of Scotland
- Category:Currencies of Denmark
- Category:Currencies of the Eurozone
- Category:Currencies of Poland
- Category:Currencies of the United Kingdom. This was Category:British money, and so no longer applies to Jersey, Guernsey, and Isle of Man. If that is a problem, we can consider another name.
- Category:Medieval currencies. New category per the infobox.
- Category:Ancient currencies
- Category:Coins of Ancient Greece
- Category:Coins of Ancient Rome
- Category:Coins of Byzantium
- Category:Coins of Ancient Asia. New category per the infobox.
- Category:Primitive currency. New category per the infobox.
- Category:Modern currencies. All modern currencies (as opposed to medieval or ancient).
- Category:Currency stubs.
- Category:Money forgery. Does this belong under currency as Category:Currency forgery?
- Category:Monetary reform. Does this belong under currency? Monetary Reform is accounting reform that reaches more deeply into banking central bank, money supply and monetary policy. It affects how money is created and destroyed, and what constitutes a reliable measure of economic growth and measures of national income.
Examples
These are some existing articles, and where they belong in the new category structure (for clarity, I'm including the entire hierarchy). Most articles will be in at least two categories (one for geography, one for time), with some also in a third or more for extra information (e.g., "Coins", or "Monetary Unions").
- "Currency"->""->"Currencies of Europe"->"Currencies of the United Kingdom"->"Coins of the United Kingdom"
- "Currency"->"Official currencies"->"Modern obsolete currencies"
- "Currency"->"Coins"->"British coins"
- CFA franc (this article mentions specific coins and banknotes, so it is included in those categories)
- "Currency"->"Official currencies"->"Currencies of African"

- "Currency"->"Official currencies"->"Monetary unions"
- "Currency"->"Coins"
- "Currency"->"Banknotes"

- "Currency"->"Official currencies"->"Currencies of Europe"
- "Currency"->"Official currencies"->"Modern obsolete currencies"
- "Currency"->"Official currencies"->"Ancient currencies"

Proposed moves
As the first stage of the process, the following moves are proposed:
- Category:National currencies -> Category:Circulating currencies
- Category:Historical currencies -> Category:Modern obsolete currencies
- Category:Regional currencies -> Category:Monetary unions
- Category:African currencies -> Category:Currencies of Africa
- Category:Currency of Canada -> Category:Currencies of Canada
- Category:Canadian coins -> Category:Coins of Canada
- Category:Currency of the United States -> Category:Currencies of the United States
- Category:Federal Reserve Notes -> Category:Banknotes of the United States
- Category:Asian currencies -> Category:Currencies of Asia and the Pacific
- Category:European currencies -> Category:Currencies of Europe
- Category:British money -> Category:Currencies of the United Kingdom
- Category:British coinage -> Category:Coins of the United Kingdom
- Category:Scottish currency -> Category:Currencies of Scotland
- Category:Danish krone -> Category:Currencies of Denmark
- Category:Euro -> Category:Currencies of the Eurozone
- Category:Euro coins -> Category:Coins of the Eurozone
- Category:Greek currencies -> Category:Coins of Ancient Greece
- Category:Ancient Roman currency -> Category:Coins of Ancient Rome
- Category:United States coins -> Category:Coins of the United States
After these moves happen, each will have to be checked. For example, Historical currencies contains modern obsolete, medieval, and ancient and will have to be split. Also, Greek currencies contains modern Greek. Many currencies are only listed in Historical currencies and will need to be added to their geographic category as well.
