Wizard Staff (also known as Wisest Wizard) is a drinking game in which players make a staff out of drunk cans of beer resembling the staff of a wizard. A study conducted by the Ontario Center for Addiction and Mental Health discovered that the largest demographic participating in this drinking game is 19 to 29 year old males.[1] It is said to have started among skateboarding and heavy metal groups. Richard Smith, part Simon Fraser University's School of Communication, has said that the popularity of the game is due in part to the visual aspect of the game and being able to share pictures of it with friends. [2]
Rules
After consuming a can, the player levels up and another can is duct taped on top of the first one. Each can consumed counts as one level, so upon finishing the first beer, the player becomes a Level 1 Wizard. At the beginning of the game, players decide on an interval to fight bosses (usually every 5 levels). These bosses are shots of hard liquor that are named after the liquor. For example, Boss Daniel's would be a shot of Jack Daniel's whiskey[3]. Taking these shots is required to advanced to the next level. The idea is to have multiple brands of hard liquor so that you can fight a different boss at each interval.[4]
Name
The name of the game stems from the end result. Once players are done with the game, they have a staff made out of beer cans, similar to the ones wizard's traditionally carry. The leveling system resembles the game Dungeons and Dragons where players choose a character class, one of which is Wizard, and fight monsters and bosses to increase in level, where the beer is the monsters and shots are the bosses.
