HP Application Lifecycle Management (HP ALM) is a suite of enterprise software developed and marketed by the HP Software Division for managing and automating application modernization activities.[1] The latest version of the software, released in November 2010, is HP ALM 11.0.[2] The solution provides Information Technology departments with a centralized application management platform for managing and automating within and across application teams and throughout the complete process of developing an application, all within a single workflow.[3] Other companies who produce application lifecycle management software include Micro Focus International and IBM .[4]
The HP ALM 11 suite includes products from HP Quality Center and HP Performance Center. Used together the software products create a unified system that enables an IT department to deliver software applications and services across heterogeneous environments. HP ALM 11 is compatible with several developer environments, including Eclipse software, CollabNet Team Forge and Microsoft Visual Studio.[5] In addition to the software solutions, there are a number of consulting services offered by HP to support the HP ALM 11 suite.
Components within the HP ALM suite
HP Business Process Testing
HP Business Process Testing is a web-based test design software solution. By using keywords, subject matter experts across an organization can build and perform manual and automated tests without any programming expertise.[6]
HP Functional Testing
This software is used by an IT department to build functional and regression test suites and provides a means for collaboration among testers. HP Functional Testing includes an application build feature that allows testers to update one reference in a shared repository and then propagate the changes to all referencing tests. The solution supports Web 2.0 technologies including Silverlight, Flex, Ajax and Dojo. HP QuickTest Professional is sold as part of the HP Functional Testing solution. HP Functional Testing can be bought separately or as part of suite of products sold as HP Unified Functional testing software.[7]
HP LoadRunner
HP LoadRunner is automated performance and load testing software used to examine system behavior and performance, while generating actual load.[8] HP LoadRunner can emulate thousands of concurrent users to put the application through real-life user loads, while collecting information from key infrastructure components (Web servers, database servers etc.)[9] The results can then be analyzed in detail, to explore the cause for specific behavior and detect bottlenecks.
HP Performance Center
HP Performance Center software is an enterprise-class performance testing platform and framework. The solution is used by IT departments to standardize, centralize and conduct performance testing. HP Performance Center finds software code flaws across the lifecycle of applications. Built on HP LoadRunner software, Performance Center supports developer testing and integrates with HP ALM and HP Business Availability Center.[10]
HP Quality Center
HP Quality Center software is a Web-based quality management platform than can be used for a single project or across multiple IT projects to manage application quality across the entire application lifecycle. The solution provides requirements management, release and cycle management, test management, defect management and reporting all from a single platform.[11]
HP Requirements Management module
This module is used by IT departments to capture, manage and track requirements throughout the application development and testing cycle.
HP Service Test Management module
HP Service Test Management module is used by quality assurance teams in the IT department. The solution provides automatic quality assurance testing and is used to identify application component changes so that the solution can automatically generate necessary test cases.
HP Service Test
This software, using a visual test design interface, automates non-GUI (graphical user interface) services and components. Service Test’s .Net environment includes an extensive toolbox that can be dragged and dropped into the test flow to allow for advanced testing.
HP Sprinter
This software automates manual testing activities such as mirror testing, defect logging, setting up data and manually driving repetitive tasks across multiple environments. The solution is fully integrated with HP Application Lifecycle Management and HP Quality Center software. [12]
HP Test Data Management
HP Test Data Management is a structured, automated test data management software solution that employs automated data sub-setting and masking.[13]
HP Unified Functional Testing
A combination of HP Functional Test (QuickTest Professional) and HP Service Test, HP Unified Functional Testing is an automated functional defect testing solution for both GUI and non-GUI applications.[14]
