Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry is a peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes scholarly Articles and Reviews relating to biological and process-engineering sciences that underpin the translation of discoveries in life sciences to therapeutic and diagnostic products for the benefit of mankind. Topics covered include nucleic acids and proteins engineering and purification; genes peptides and proteins therapy; biomaterials; biological modeling; stem cells and tissue engineering; bio-imaging; bio-sensors; biotechnology of food and natural compounds

Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry is currently published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.[1]

History

The journal was first published in 1979 under the title Journal of Applied Biochemistry (ISSN 0161-7354) by Academic Press, and assumed its present title in 1986.[2] In 1993, publication was taken over by Portland Press and in 2011 the journal moved to Wiley-Blackwell.[2][3] Originally publishing papers in general applied biochemistry, the journal has changed its scope to focus on diagnostics and therapeutics.[citation needed]

Former Editors-in Chief include Peter Campbell (University College London, UK) (before 1996) and Roger Lundblad (formerly of Baxter Biotech, Duarte, USA) (1996–2002).

Modern journal

Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry is now published bi-monthly by Wiley-Blackwell, confirming the journal's dedication to change and commitment to rapid publication of high-quality, cutting-edge research at the interface between life sciences and their translation. It publishes new concepts in technology/methodology of relevance to the biological, biomedical, agricultural and environmental sciences. From 2007, the journal has appeared monthly online. Content from 1998 is available online in PDF and HTML formats, with papers from 2005 also being available in an enhanced full-text format (EESI-View). The journal has introduced the facility for authors to pay for their papers to be available freely online.

The journal's 2009 impact factor was 1.239, with a ranking of 107 out of 152 journals in the ISI Biotechnology and Applied Microbiology category.[citation needed] Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry is indexed by BIOBASE/CABS, BIOSIS, CAB International, Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, Dechema, EMBASE/Excerpta Medica, MEDLINE, International Food Information Service, IFIS Publishing and the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI).

As of 2008 the Editor-in-Chief is Parviz A. Shamlou (Eli Lilly, Indianapolis, USA).
