Signal-recognition particle

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Pi Delport (talk | contribs) at 09:19, 22 February 2006 (propose merge to Signal recognition particle). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

A signal-recognition particle or SRP is a cytosolic particle that transiently binds:

  1. To the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) signal sequence in a nascent protein
  2. To the large ribosomal unit
  3. To the SRP receptor

SRP and its receptor initiate the transfer of the nascent chain across the ER membrane. Once the chain reaches the translocon, SRP and its receptor dislocate.
