Area code 582 will be the new area code for Northwestern Pennsylvania, replacing area code 814, which is being subdivided. Previously, 814 was the only area code in Pennsylvania still in its original territory. It will primarily serve the Erie, Pennsylvania area.

The counties that the 582 area code will cover include all of Erie, Crawford, Warren, Venango, Forest, Clarion, Jefferson, Elk, and McKean counties. These areas currently have the 814 area code.

Parts of Armstrong, Clearfield, Indiana and Mercer counties will also get the new area code. Most of Clearfield and Indiana will retain 814, while the other two counties mostly use area code 724.

The new area code will go into effect on February 1, 2012, unless the exhaust date pushes back substantially or the split is overturned and replaced with an overlay.[1]
