Learning and Teaching Scotland
Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS) is the national body responsible for reviewing the Scottish curriculum, developing assessment to support learning, and providing national guidance and advice to the education system on the use of ICT to support learning and teaching. LTS provides advice to Scottish Ministers on all matters related to learning and teaching, the curriculum, assessment and ICT.
LTS have valuable and productive relationships with schools and local authorities, and work in close partnership with the Scottish Government, HM Inspectors of Education (HMIE), the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA), Association of Directors of Education (ADES), the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) and the Financial Services Authority (FSA).
LTS core remit;
Curriculum To keep the curriculum 3–18 under review and provide advice and support, including quality assured resources on the curriculum 3–18, to Ministers and the education system.
Assessment To providing advice and support to Ministers and the education system on assessment to support learning, with support from the SQA as appropriate, and to work with Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) to ensure the availability of quality-assured resources to support assessment.
Glow and ICT in schools To provide advice and support to Ministers and the education system on the use of ICT to support education, to establish and maintain technology standards for education, to ensure practitioners have easy online access to advice and support, including digital resources. LTS also manage the provision of Glow [[1]] , a national intranet to support education, as well as the provision of the LTS Online Service which is home to a wealth of resources to support learning and teaching.
Community learning and development Learning and Teaching Scotland is responsible for implementing Scottish Government community learning and development policy. The Working and learning together to build stronger communities (WALT) communities policy defines three priorities for CLD: working with adult learners, working with young people and building community capacity Curriculum for Excellence
Curriculum for Excellence LTS plays a key role in supporting implementation of Curriculum for Excellence [[2]] at national and local levels, providing ongoing guidance, resources and professional development for practitioners in all sectors of education. LTS provides a wide range of support for the education community by engaging with large numbers of practitioners across all local authorities, publishing guidance and exemplars that encourage the sharing of good practice in all areas of Curriculum for Excellence including: using the experiences and outcomes, curriculum planning and supporting approaches to assessment.
Providing leadership and direction, LTS works in close partnership with others to:
- Support better outcomes for all children and young people
- Support Curriculum for Excellence through Glow and online CPD
- Support the development and delivery of NAR, Scotland’s National Assessment Resource to support Curriculum for Excellence.
