Base is an international design, communications, audiovisual, copywriting and publishing firm established in 1993 with offices in Brussels, Barcelona, Madrid, New York, and Santiago, Chile .[1]

Base is composed of five departments that have a range of specializations:

  • BaseDesign (specializing in graphic design and art direction),[2]
  • BaseMotion (specializing in motion graphics and audiovisuals),[3]
  • BaseWords (specializing in creative writing and copywriting),[4]
  • BaseLab (specializing in custom type design)[5]
  • BasePublishing (specializing in publishing and distribution)

History

Base was founded in 1993 in Brussels by Thierry Brunfaut, Juliette Cavenaile, and Dimitri Jeurissen. This was followed by a second branch opening in 1997 by designer Marc Paneroin in Barcelona, a third in New York City by Geoff Cook, a fourth in Madrid, and a fifth in Santiago, Chile (in 2005 and 2009 respectively).

From late 2001 to 2003, Base designed and produced BEople, “a magazine about a certain Belgium.”.[6] In 2005 Base invested in global book-distribution company ACTAR, to form a publishing company. The first book from BasePublishing was a monograph of artist [[Ann Veronica Janssens entitled "Are You Experienced?" ,[7][8] and was released in 2009. In 2007, Base partnered to open BozarShop ,[9] the museum store at the Centre for Fine Arts, Brussels.
