The 1994 Java earthquake, or the 1994 Java tsunami earthquake, occurred on June 3, 1994 at 01:18 local time (on June 2, at 18:18 GMT). The epicenter was off the eastern part of the southern Java coast, near the east end of the Java Trench.[1] It had a magnitude of Mw 7.8. This earthquake was classified as a "slow tsunami earthquake"[2][3] The triggered tsunami reached Java and Bali, with runups up to 14 m in east Java coast and 5 m in southwestern Bali coast. More than 200 people were killed in the tsunami.[4] This earthquake could be felt strongly across Bali, central and eastern Java, Lombok and Sumbawa.[5]
