LOCK AND LOAD Origin: The 'command term' entered the military lexicon with the adoption and issue of the U.S. Rifle, Caliber .30, M1 (Garand) in 1936 . In order to "load" the eight round 'en-bloc' clip into the weapon, it was necessary to first "lock" back the rifle's bolt in the open position.
