I recommend you use {{scref}} and {{scnote}} as noted on the help page. Or split the page— it is taking a very long time to load. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 21:59, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

Two questions

The Talk page for {{Template reference list}} is a REDIRECT to this Talk page, and I wonder why? Also, I note that there is a notation on that template in italics that reads: This reference list does not appear in the article. But the reference list does appear in articles, e.g., Hydrogen, and it seems that this is the desirable situation. So why would there be such an italicized notation if the refs do appear in articles? What am I missing?

  • As noted above, this is a centralized talk page for a number of related categories, templates and system pages. Editors do not have to try to keep a couple of dozen talk pages on their watchlist, especially where there is little discussion on those pages.
  • Articles use {{reflist}}. Some templates include references— if the template page does not include the markup to show the reference list, an error message will show. {{Template reference list}} is designed to show the references, but dose not transclude to the article, which should have its own markup. The list at MediaWiki:Cite references link many format backlink labels isn't long enough. On the page List of allied military operations of the Vietnam War, that entire list is gone through and there is a large series of error messages for Footnote #1. The list needs to be continued like this: aaa aab aac aad aae aaf aag aah aai aaj aak aal aam aan aao aap aaq aar aas aat aau aav aaw aax aay aaz aba abb abc abd abe abf abg abh abi abj abk abl abm abo abp abq abr abs abt abu abv abw abx aby abz aca acb acc acd ace acf acg ach aci acj ack acl acm acn aco acp acq acr acs act acu acv acw acx acy acz ada adb adc add ade adf adg adh adi adj adk adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea aeb aec aed aee aef aeg aeh aei aej aek ael aem aen aeo aep aeq aer aes aet aeu aev aew aex aey aez
