Founded in 1998, Design of Systems on Silicon S.A. (DS2), is a leading supplier of silicon and software for Power line Communications (PLC) and the first company to develop and market PLC chipsets delivering data rates of up to 200 Mbit/s.
On 5 March 2010, DS2 reported the company entered the Spanish equivalent of voluntary chapter 11 (concurso de acreedores, in Spanish)[1].
Standards
DS2 develops products compliant with the 200 Mbit/s specification developed by the Universal Powerline Association (UPA).
On Dec 2008, DS2 announced plans to develop the DSS9960 chip, which will be a dual-mode device interoperable both with the ITU-T G.hn standard and with the UPA specification[2].
G.hn is the first international standard that provides a way to create a high-speed (up to 1 Gigabit/s)[3] Local area network using existing home wiring (power lines, phone lines and coaxial cables). G.hn is promoted by HomeGrid Forum and supported by a number of home networking organizations such as (CEPCA, HomePNA and the Universal Powerline Association).[4][5][6]
DS2 showcased the advanced state of their G.hn development at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2010 by performing live demonstrations [7] of G.hn prototypes over the three medium types G.hn is defined to operate over (coax, phoneline, and powerline). It is expected that DS2 will deliver early silicon in Q3 2010.
Jorge Blasco, President and CEO of DS2, was nominated for the European Inventor of the Year Award. The European Inventor of the Year Award ceremony was held in Madrid, Spain along with the European Patent Forum 2010 at Eurostars Tower Hotel on the 28 and 29 April 2010[8]. A video and excerpt can be found at the European Patent Office explaining the nomination and the invention[9][10].
History
Started in 1998 at the European Innovative Companies Center (CEEI) in the Paterna Technology Park. Reported $20 million in sales in 2008, compared to $15 million in 2007 and $12 million in 2006. Had over 140 employees in 2008.[11]
