This is my sandbox. On occasion, I take class notes here and transfer them to my home computer whenever I forget to bring materials to Journalism 101 and 102. If you see the {{inuse}} tag atop this page, that's what I'm doing, so please do not rake my sandbox until this tag is removed!

don't remove! -- notes from class, thursday, 19 jan 2006 1104pst

  • use safe wording to avoid libel cases -- instead of "arrested for" use "arrested on charges of" or "for suspicion of"
    • TNT says not to give suspect name until formally charged!
  • qualified privlege - means you can report things that are defamatory as long as they were not used out of context of a news story
    • ...as long as this was done in a public forum or discussion
    • ...and not told to you in private by some whackjob on the street
  • blind leads are best for crime stories
    • ...unless the person charged or suspected is famous!!
