Read codes are the standard medical diagnosis coding system used in General Practice in the United Kingdom. It was originally developped in the early 1980s by Dr James Read, a Loughborough general medical practitioner.[1]

History

In 1988 a joint conference of the Royal College of General Practitioners and the British Medical Association recommended standardisation of the system in general practice clinical information systems and the National Health Service manadated this in April 1999.[2] The NHS has stipulated a move to SNOMED CT but to date there is no date specified for this.
