Virtual Back off Algorithm
The Virtual Back off Algorithm is developed by Prof. P. Venkata Krishna, Prof. Sudip Misra, Prof. M. S. Obdaiat and Prof. V. Saritha in 2008 and was published in IEEE Trans. on VTS. This algorithm aims to improve the performance of DCF protocol of 802.11 MAC. The basic principle is based on the use of Sequencing Technique where each node in the wireless network maintains a counter which limits the number attempts to less than or equal to K(Sequence Number).
Use of VBA, reduces number of collisions and increases throughput significantly in wireless networks. The complextiy of this method is less and implementing this method is simple as we need to introduce counter at each node. This method is energy efficient one.
