The transmitted information doesn't have to be bits, using non-binary symbols can achieve a significant performance improvement (see Davey, M.C. and D.J.C MacKay, "Low-Density Parity-Check Codes over GF(q)," IEEE Communications Letters, Vol. 2, No. 6, June 1998, pp165-167).
