The Current Protocols series was conceived in 1987 by a group of researchers at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital who saw the need for an ever-evolving and consistently up-to-date collection of research techniques that could match the fast pace of scientific change.

In 2010 there are 16 Current Protocols titles. These titles are updated with new and revised material on a quarterly basis to ensure that developments within their respective fields are taken into account. All protocols are selected and peer-reviewed by distinguished editorial board members, then edited by a scientifically qualified in-house team.

Current Protocols techniques are presented in a step-by-step format. Annotations and descriptive commentaries add extra explanation and context, and anticipate any questions researchers might have.

In 2009, in consultation with practicing researchers to help further enhance the Current Protocols experience, www.currentprotocols.com was launched. The site features online versions of all of the texts, research tools, video protocols, and a blog.
