Brekstad is the administrative centre of Ørland municipality, Norway. Its population is 1,865. [1]
Location
Brekstad is the seat of Fosen District Court, Brekstad road maintenance and NAV Fosen work. The major employers are Ørland Main Air Station, Mascot Høie linen factory, COOP Fosen and TineMidt-Norge BA. Brekstad received town status on 8 October 2005, thus becoming the 95th city in Norway. Brekstad has connection with the Coastal Express bus to Trondheim, Hitra, Freya, Storfosna and Kristiansund.[2]
History
Brekstad post office was established in 1883. Ørland church is located on Brekstad. Ørland cultural center opened in 2009. Brekstad is also the site of Skjeggehaugen, from the Old Norse word haugr meaning mound. Skjeggehaugen is an ancient burial mound which measures about 50-60 metres across and from 6-7 metres in height. It is located about 60 metres north-east of Ørland Church. [3]
