HNLMS Java
Appearance
HNMS Java was a light cruiser in the Royal Netherlands Navy. Designed in 1916, she was already old-fashioned by the time she was commissioned in 1925. The Java saw action mostly in convoy duties during the Spanish Civil War and during World War II.
She was sunk by a Japanese Long Lance torpedo in the Battle of the Java Sea, 1942, and went down with 500 hands.
Her sister ship HNMS Sumatra was scuttled off the coast of Normandy in 1944 as part of a pier to protect the artifical harbour built by the allies.
