Llofriu (name of Germanic origin) is an aggregate of the town of Palafrugell (Baix Empordà), in Catalonia (Spain) It has 294 inhabitants (2005). The parish church of St. Fruitós, as mentioned in a testament to the year 1121, was dependent on the priory of Santa Anna of Barcelona until the seizure (first third of the nineteenth century). The houses, sheltered near the church, forming an interesting collection of folk architecture (seventeenth to nineteenth centuries). The layout of streets and the door of the church reminds us of the medieval village. The economy is based primarily on agriculture and livestock, although the majority of its people work today in Palafrugell, the service sector. In addition to the core of houses and farms, there is the cemetery where is buried the writer Josep Pla, who lived many years in his farmhouse in Llofriu.

Economy

Based mainly on agriculture and livestock, although the majority of people living in their work has Llofriu the services sector, specifically in the towns of Palafrugell and around. This makes the town itself does not have much commercial business sector, and that all businesses located in Barceloneta, where you can find a bakery, a tight, three restaurants and a car repair shop.

Holidays and Traditions

  • Festival of cork harvesting On Saturday before the Midsummer Eve called Sant Joan.
  • Festa Major (village festival) in honour of St. Fruitós.

Directions to Llofriu

The easiest way to access Llofriu drive is particularly the  C-66  but also has the ability to reach with regular bus line that stops at SARFA Barceloneta and the roundabout between the core Town and district station.

By car
Take the  AP-7   E-15  towards Girona and take exit 9 to Vidreres and through the  C-35  which passes it to say  C-31  at the height of Llagostera, Platja d'Aro, Calonge, Palamos, Mon-ras, Palafrugell (from Palafrugell, the road becomes a road named  C-66  to Llofriu.
By train
With regular RENFE to Flaçà, there, take a SARFA bus to Llofriu.

Scheduled SARFA from Estació del Nord (north bus station) in Barcelona.
By car
Take the  C-66  direction La Bisbal d'Emporda, Vulpellac until Llofriu.

With regular RENFE train from Girona station to Flaçà and then you take a bus to stop SARFA Llofriu.

Infrastructure projects

  • The  C-66 , the current road through the neighborhood of Barceloneta Llofriu is the main artery of communication in the area.
  • The proposed splitting of the  C-31  /  C-66  (Gavarres Highway ring project) that promotes the Generalitat of Catalonia will affect the north of Llofriu, the existing road will increase to two lanes each way.

Attractions and monuments

  • St. Fruitós church
The current church building is from the seventeenth century, rebuilt an old Romanesque church-style, of which only remains a group of pieces of iron in the door.
The church comprises a nave with side chapels and a polygonal apse, with a rectangular gate. Its bell tower is square. In the civil war, burns and desapear a extraordinary Baroque altar.
The church was sacked in 1638 by Spanish soldiers in retaliation to fight in Palafrugell (neighbors revolt against the Castilian soldiers Felipe IV hosted in Palafrugell in response to pillage and plunder to which they were subjected to some considered as the origin of the Catalan Revolt)[1].
  • Old village
Interesting set of traditional architecture, dated between the seventeenth to the nineteenth century. The oldest house dates from 1764, at least, that's enrolled in one of its doors.
  • Cemetery
The cemetery of 1895 id style neoclassical is buried where the writer Josep Pla i Casadevall.
  • Mas Pla
Farmhouse of the seventeenth century, is located in the area of the slurry side of the road C-31, very near to Palafrugell.
  • Manor of Bassa Rocas
From the sixteenth century, preserved in the walls, drawings and texts by members of this family, who have made significant cultural contributions to Catalonia and America. After that the house is without tenants, was converted into primary school CEIP, due to little use was no longer used as such. Later the house became a cultural center and in 2008 the City of Palafrugell, after a year of restoration and preparation building, was opened again.
