Interlanguage can mean:

  • Any language used between persons who cannot communicate by means of their first languages. It may be a pidgin, an established vehicular language (lingua franca), a constructed international auxiliary language or any other spoken, signed or written language used in this function.
  • A learner's interlanguage (interim language), i.e., an emerging linguistic system developed by a learner of a second language.
