Multi-pointer X
Currently, there is a lot of confusion about multi-pointer X as opposed to multi-touch support in X (which basically doesn't exist yet). I think the Wikipedia article about Multi-Pointer X should distinguish between multi-pointer and multi-touch more clearly, perhaps in a separate header, to avoid this confusion. HTML guru (talk) 03:41, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
Huh?
I'm sorry if this seems like a strange question to you all, but what in the hell does X Windows have to do with Linux? Linux has a loose tie to GNU, through common use of the userland tools they've made, and through sharing the same licences, but Linux has no ties to the X consortiums. 74.14.157.141 02:10, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
- It it pretty much THE windowing system used for Linux GUIs? That ties it closely enough in my book. --Falcorian (talk) 07:03, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
- And it is not Linux, it is X. Is this the POSIX Wikiproject then? GNU isn't even Linux, only Linux is Linux. 74.13.34.54 08:55, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
- And? The Project is a just a group of people working on articles. If they want to include X and GNU, then... They will? It's really that simple.
- And it is not Linux, it is X. Is this the POSIX Wikiproject then? GNU isn't even Linux, only Linux is Linux. 74.13.34.54 08:55, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
- I guess I'm confused because I'm not sure what your point is, nor what action you'd like to see taken? If it's just a "Why do you guys keep track of those articles?" then the answer really is as simple as "Because we want to." --Falcorian (talk) 00:35, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
- Then why are you called the Linux Wikiproject, if Linux isn't your focus, but rather, "stuff we want to." I suppose, "wikiproject stuff-we-want-to," wouldn't have been a very good name. You're running around in a grey area, muddying the meanings of terms when you call everything you like Linux, instead of calling Linux, "Linux," and other things, other things. 74.13.48.67 00:49, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
FAR for X Window System core protocol
X Window System core protocol has been nominated for a featured article review. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. Please leave your comments and help us to return the article to featured quality. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, articles are moved onto the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Remove" the article from featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. Reviewers' concerns are here.

"This project has just started": Over a year ago
"At the moment, this project has just started, and needs members." -- This was originally added to the project's main page on 26 July 2006. I know that Linuxors are free-thinking independent types, but it seems to me that after almost a year and a half, it's time to remove the "just started". -- Writtenonsand (talk) 20:49, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
"Linux server" article?
Wikipedia has a number of articles related to the subject of Web servers, including Linux-based web servers. Would there be any point to making an article at Linux server (or whatever would be the best title) to act as a central catch-all on this subject? (Cf. the page Desktop Linux.) -- Writtenonsand (talk) 21:07, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

I've tried to implement this release history table on many Linux/open-source articles: Release history table

Please PM me if you use it, but you don't have to.

Ubuntu GA Help, please!
We're almost done with readying Ubunut for Good Article status. However, the GA reviewer has asked that the prose in the Package classification and support section be fixed. If others could have a look at it, that'd be great! I'll look over it as well. I'd also like someone to give the Alternate Installation a look over and copy edit, as I massed it together earlier. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme
As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.
- The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
- The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
- A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.
Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.
Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! For the 1.0 Editorial Team, §hepBot (Disable) 20:53, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Articles flagged for cleanup
Currently, 367 articles are assigned to this project, of which 168, or 45.8%, are flagged for cleanup of some sort. (Data as of 14 July 2008.) Are you interested in finding out more? I am offering to generate cleanup to-do lists on a project or work group level. See User:B. Wolterding/Cleanup listings for details. More than 150 projects and work groups have already subscribed, and adding a subscription for yours is easy - just place a template on your project page.

Notability of distributions
Are people in this project comfortable with all the fringe articles being created for distros that seemingly have no notability? Refer to the List of Linux distributions or Comparison of Linux distributions. A lot of these are somewhat trivial forks/mods of major distros. They haven't received any significant coverage in reliable secondary sources. I'm not deeply knowledgeable of the Linux community or trends so it would be preferable if someone who is could go through the list and use their judgment about whether some of these articles really belong on WP. Ham Pastrami (talk) 00:18, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- Please see my comment in next section. StuRat (talk) 03:57, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

Since StuRat has accused me of acting in bad faith, I'll make it easy for everyone to decide for themselves. Here's the full list of Linux distros that I have sent to AfD. Some "borderline" cases were not renominated, due to the objection of "mass deletion" (both Stu and DGG expressed that they were bothered by the quantity of articles; which to me is strange because I'm pretty sure that this is not a factor in whether an article should be deleted or not). As a concession I'm limiting the renoms to some of the worst offenders. I'll also reiterate here (as I did in the AfDs) that these are procedural noms -- notability is uncertain to me, I don't necessarily think they should be deleted. But as a matter of policy, if these articles don't have any reliable sources to back them up they probably don't belong here. Ham Pastrami (talk) 05:12, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
Web sources for Linux
This project's members may be interested in the discussion at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard#Linux websites that I have started. The aim is to determine which sources may be usable for Linux-related articles. Feel free to add your own comments regarding the websites or suggest a website of your own. Ham Pastrami (talk) 02:41, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
Mass deletion of Linux articles
Note that Ham Pastrami seems to have an interest in the mass deletion of Linux-related articles and other computer-related articles. He first put a tag on dozens of articles saying they would be deleted in 5 days due to a lack of notability, even though many are clearly notable, such as the Novell Open Enterprise Server article. After I removed those tags he then started nominating each for the AfD process. I suggest you follow his actions through his contributions list to determine what he will try to delete next. StuRat (talk) 03:57, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
- LOL. I nominated a number of Linux distros (what Stu refers to as "mass deletion of Linux-related articles and other computer-related articles") that were of questionable notability, as far as I could tell, per my comment in the immediately preceding section. (Really Stu, you can't even make a fair representation of the issue without injecting hyperbole?) I could be wrong about some of the nominations, and that's fine -- simply vote to keep them or provide a reliable source to verify them and I'll withdraw the nom. What StuRat has done is tried to shoot down every nomination based on his objection to the single Novell article. So yes, the natural course of action was to take it to AfD since Stu cannot disingenuously dismiss the nominations there. I will tell you what I plan to do next -- I'm going to wait for the AfDs to be settled, and in the meantime, I'll be busy replying to all the love letters that Stu is leaving me on my talk page. Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Linux
Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.
We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.
A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.
We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! Coordinators' working group
Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.
All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 05:51, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.
If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none
parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.
Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

Importance in Assessment
Recently, I introduced the Importance scale in WPLinux template in order to further categorize the articles related to Linux. All members of WPLinux are invited to assess the articles for importance. 414 articles remain to be assessed as I write this and I think that we should aim to reduce this to at least 100 if not less. After a recent request, I added WikiProject Linux to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Linux/Popular pages.
The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. You can view more results, request a new project be added to the list, or request a configuration change for this project using the toolserver tool.
