:I'm fine with ALTa, but not with ALT1a. The source says: "Enlarged, molariform dentition associated with eating hard foods is known to occur in numerous lizards such as (...), but heretofore has never been reported in an amphisbaenid. Blunt, crushing teeth similar to those of molluscivorous lizards are present in Amphisbaena ridleyi". What is reported to be special about A. ridleyi are its morphological specializations for crushing snails; the source doesn't positively say the facts that are in ALT1a. Ucucha 04:07, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
::I could only see from the abstract that they "feed on small snails, but their diet also includes other inter invertebrates" and you certainly know this topic better. What's the crucial difference between ALT1 and ALT1a? What were you fine with above? Materialscientist (talk) 04:17, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
:::All of that quote comes from the abstract. The crucial difference between ALT1 and ALT1a is "only ... specialized for eating" versus "only ... which mostly eats". The former is supported by the source, the latter goes beyond it. Rephrased some parts of my former comment which were confusingly worded. Ucucha 04:24, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
::::I'm curious to learn the difference between the last 2 quotes. Materialscientist (talk) 04:48, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
:::::What is special about it are its morphological adaptations (big teeth, form of the lower jaw), which "heretofore [have] never been reported in an amphisbaenid". ALT1a concludes from that that its eating snails is what is special, but that is not what the source says. Ucucha 04:52, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
::::::Not just that, the real speciality is that they behave in this way because there were no predators on those islands. These animals live a subterranean existence everywhere else in the world...and everywhere else in the world they eat ants, termites, worms, smaller snakes, etc. Here they can leave their burrows and climb trees to eat snails(the snails they eat are tree snails) and drink nectar. I wonder since Tegus have been introduced in the 1960's if there's very many of these left at all or if they still behave the same way? My specialty is other insular animals like Cyclura and Sauromalus which evolved sleeping in the open or in a shallow burrow at night due to no predators:feral dogs, cats, rats, raccoons, etc have wiped out alot of those types for that reason.--Mike - Μολὼν λαβέ 05:06, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
<indent>Well then it could be (in layman terms) ALT1b
... that Amphisbaena ridleyi is the only worm lizard whose jaws are suited for eating hard food such as snails? but if so then it sounds speculative - if other lizards do eat snail frequently then it is not fair to say they are not suited for that. Materialscientist (talk) 05:13, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
::Not the only lizard, that's pretty much all that Caiman lizards eat.--Mike - Μολὼν λαβέ 05:27, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
:::Note that we say "worm lizard", not "lizard". Not sure whether the tegu has that much effect on it--it was still said to be common in 1973.
:::Materialscientist: Is "specialized" really such a difficult term for laypersons that we have to avoid it? And the specialization is also (and primarily) in its teeth, not the jaws itself, so I wouldn't even consider ALT1b completely accurate. What about this (incorporating Mike's comments a little; ALT2):
... that the worm lizard Amphisbaena ridleyi, isolated on remote Fernando de Noronha, is specialized to eat snails and to climb trees to eat nectar? Ucucha 12:10, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
::The hook is getting more interesting, but "specialized to eat" sound really odd to my ear and there is an awkward repetition. How about ALT2a
... that the worm lizard Amphisbaena ridleyi, isolated on remote Fernando de Noronha, is known for eating snails and for climbing trees to drink nectar from the flowers? I do understand what you want to say about jaws and specialized, but would keep it for the article. IMO, flow of the hook is more important than exactness (hook is not meant to provide definitions). Materialscientist (talk) 02:33, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
:I'm fine with ALT2a, except for the grammar and facts which you mixed up a little, and which I corrected. :) It doesn't eat the snails in the trees, only the nectar. Ucucha 02:36, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
::Hold on. You said well above "Here they can leave their burrows and climb trees to eat snails(the snails they eat are tree snails)". Which statement is incorrect? Materialscientist (talk) 02:44, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
:::Alt2A is fine...might be time to take this to the article's talk page (snails in question are tree snails, BTW)--Mike - Μολὼν λαβέ 03:23, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
:::(edit conflict) That was not me, but Mike. Sorry for missing that comment. The article I read (Pregill, 1994) doesn't mention the habits of the snakes, but he has additional sources which presumably do have that information. It's not currently in the article, though, and honestly it would go a little past my weirdness barrier. It can climb trees all it wants in the dry season, but amphisbaenians are still supposed to be burrowing, and this one is certainly found under stones. It could as well just eat snails that live on the ground, you know.
:::I reverted ALT2a to your original version, but would still prefer the version I introduced (ALT2b):
... that the worm lizard Amphisbaena ridleyi, isolated on remote Fernando de Noronha, is known for eating snails and for climbing trees to drink nectar from the flowers?

:* Date and expansion are Ok. A few requests: (i) any chance for a less specific hook (yes, it is hard, but can we try?) (ii) could you help with finding the hook in the article? (iii) could you cite a few unreferenced paragraphs (iv) There is a large collection of references at the bottom, most of which are not directly used in the article. As a result, it is even hard to locate the cited source from the notes. Can we rectify this? Loose lists are rarely tolerated. Materialscientist (talk) 07:39, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
::*(i) I'll see what I can come up with. But "less specific" seems a very strange thing to ask for in a DYK hook. Do you really intend to ask for something vague and uninformative? Or did you mean "less technical"? (ii) the part about perfect graphs is in Clique problem#Special classes of graphs (near the start of the second paragraph) and the part about NP-completeness is Clique problem#NP-completeness. (iii) References for non-hook facts are not required by DYK, but I believe most of the material in the article either has a source listed or is sourced in the wikilink that it includes. Note that inline (Harvard style) sources are still sources; sources do not need to be footnotes. Was there something specific that you wanted sourced? (iv) I didn't intend to include a reference if I didn't refer to it in the article (again, please note that only some of the references are footnotes), so if there is something that is not referenced at all then that is a mistake. Can you name a specific source for which that is the case? As for "it is even hard to locate the cited source from the notes", did you try clicking on the links in the notes? —David Eppstein (talk) 07:58, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
::*:(i) Yes, less technical; (iii) We've got an informal rule for citing every paragraph of the prose; I understand some are definitions, but they still need to be cited - wikilinks don't qualify - if other articles have references, please copy them. "Hardness" and "NP-completeness" is a clear example. Harvard is fine, but this doesn't answer (iv) - most refs there are specific articles which are apparently not linked to the text. Materialscientist (talk) 08:18, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
::*::I say again: if there is a ref in the "references" section that is not linked in the text, it is a mistake, and I would like to fix it. Can you point me to an example of one? Also, the two supposedly uncited paragraphs you mention are describing specific constructions from specific citations in the immediately preceding paragraph, and the one in "NP-completeness" explicitly mentions the Karp source by name. I have added a source (a footnote, even!) to the other one, since apparently the context from the previous paragraph wasn't sufficiently obvious. —David Eppstein (talk) 08:19, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
::*::I've now added pedantic sources to all paragraphs, with the exception of a dangling bit in the definitions section which is covered by WP:SCICITE#Uncontroversial knowledge and an earlier footnote in the same section. I hope that suffices. If you still don't understand in what way some of the paragraphs are sourced, please see Wikipedia:Citing sources#Parenthetical reference. I'm still working on the less technical hook part of your original set of requests. If you can't figure it out from the tone of my responses, I'm a little irritated; I believe you're holding this article to a far higher standard than most DYK nominations (of which I have many; see my user page). —David Eppstein (talk) 08:54, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
ALT1 ... that the clique problem of programming a computer to find complete subgraphs in an undirected graph was first studied as a way to find groups of people who all know each other in social networks?
:*Now that the referencing issues are resolved (and despite my annoyance above, I am grateful for the constructive feedback — I just didn't think getting the article to GA quality should be necessary for DYK) the only remaining issue is the hook. Fortunately, I found another highly relevant reference to add (yes, I know, the article already has some 50 references and barely scratches the surface of the literature on the problem) that supports the new hook above. (See second paragraph of lede section.) Is this one sufficiently less technical? —David Eppstein (talk) 00:34, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

:* An interesting article which checks out in terms of creation date, length and references. However, in the source quoted I cannot find where it states the lake is flooded for three months of each year per the hook. Could you give me a page number from the source please? You should also put an in-line cite against the sentence(s) used for the hook. Thanks. Nick Ottery (talk) 10:58, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
::Reference 2, page 166: "Palško jezero lake is three quarters per year dry". I added it to the second paragraph as well. Reference 1 is admittedly a bit vague about this, because it presents data for both Palško and Petelinjsko lakes together and says 3-6 months. Nevertheless, all the info in the paragraph is in the sources cited, so I think it would be a slight overkill to put the same inline citations after every sentence. — Yerpo Eh? 12:30, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

::If it is trimmed that's fine. I wasn't sure how much name recognition that Guérard had (even though he is a damn impressive chef) but having a 3-star rated restaurant is exceedingly rare.
