Wikipedia:Changing username/Simple

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Quercus Robor (talk | contribs) at 22:52, 7 December 2009 (Current requests). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Simple username changes

This page hosts simple requests for a username change across the Wikimedia network. Requests are processed by stewards and global renamers.

Instructions
  1. Read Wikipedia:Changing username carefully. You must be aware of and understand all the implications of changing your username. Specifically:
    • Your name will be changed to the new one in the page history of every page you've edited, and in all log entries.
    • Your user pages, account preferences, and edits will be moved to the new name. Please do not create a new account or attempt to move them yourself.
    • Links left by your previous signatures will still point to the old userpage; however, a redirect will be created pointing to your new userpage.
    • Understand that using your real name as your username may put you at risk of harassment.
  2. Read the username policy and ensure your new name does not violate it. Usernames must not:
  3. Check that your new username is not already in use by searching for it on Special:CentralAuth. If the name is registered, even on another Wikimedia project, it is taken.
If the target name hasn't made any edits to any Wikimedia project, you may request usurpation at meta:Steward requests/Username changes.
  4. Log in with your current username. Requests will not be approved if the requester is not logged in.
  5. Place your request here.
    • Add your desired username after NEW=.
    • Add a reason for the change after REASON=. Requests without a valid reason will not be approved.
    • Do not change anything else.
  6. Select Publish changes.
  7. Check back on this page periodically to answer any inquiries regarding your request. Consider watching the page so you can monitor updates. Requests may be closed if there are unresolved queries.

Requests that do not follow these instructions or that are grossly malformed are subject to removal.

For stewards, global renamers, and clerks

Only stewards and global renamers have the authority to approve or decline requests. Requests are automatically clerked by a bot, but occasionally human intervention is required, particularly for malformed requests. If you would like to help out with clerking, please see Wikipedia:Changing username/Assistance.

Mosscircle → Moss circle

Clerk note: Formatted malformed request. Additionally do you want the 'c' in 'circle' to be capitalized (producing 'Moss Circle')? @Kate (talk) 13:39, 28 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • I wish to exercise my "right to vanish". Simply retiring isn't enough - I wish to disassociate myself from Wikipedia entirely. As there is no account deletion facility the best I can do is a name change then retirement. I should be grateful if you would action my request which is in good faith. I really have lost patience with Wikipedia and the Wikipedia community, this exchange confirms my feelings. If you wish to block the new username after the name change, please feel free to do so.  Clerk note: Sorry, but (as stated atop the page) we do not rename accounts that plan to retire after being renamed. May I offer {{retired}} instead? —Mr. E. Sánchez (that's me!)What I Do / What I Say 11:01, 30 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Um, we do allow renames for right to vanish with personally identifiable information, do we not? Or has the policy changed recently, and if so, why? Andre (talk) 02:17, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Bureaucrat note: I think your reading is accurate, Andre. I left the clerk a message about this, but haven't heard back. --Dweller (talk) 12:39, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As a result of this, I've tightened the page instructions. Sadly, it's made them [even] longer. --Dweller (talk) 12:49, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Someone subsequently created the name on Dec 6. Not sure why or who. I think this user's frustration is justified so I renamed him to Gonefishingforgood. We don't need to wait for the clerk to sign off on it.  Done Andre (talk) 21:33, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Here's what I don't understand. If a user's name is inappropriate, you ask them if they're not going to violate COI, and then if they don't respond, you don't change their name. Then they come back in a month or a year and they still have an inappropriate username which might get them blocked on sight. Why not change the name and follow up about the COI as a separate issue? If anything, this kind of rename will reduce the self-promotion. Andre (talk) 18:48, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Renaming is courtesy service provided to good-faith, constructive editors. If a user intends to continue promoting their company, despite warnings and perhaps even blocks, they're no longer necessarily in good-standing, and thus we don't have to carry out the rename. Therefore I think Dweller's concerns on COI and spam are valid. –Juliancolton | Talk 18:54, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That isn't what Dweller means. Your wording's a bit odd and difficult to understand. Could you explain? -Jeremy (v^_^v Stop... at a WHAMMY!!) 03:20, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I certainly can't say whether I'm right, but I read it as "I want to be associated with my family's name, a suggestion they came up with for my Wikipedia account." Useight (talk) 04:14, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not done I am inferring from your use of "we" that a collective is operating this account (or, at least, that one person is operating the account in the capacity of a collective). Wikipedia accounts are for use by one person only, and group editing – especially from an organisation or company – is not tolerated. Per Wikipedia:Account_deletion#Sharing_accounts, I have softblocked the account. —Anonymous DissidentTalk 10:15, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
