Roderick Royal is the acting mayor of Birmingham, Alabama. He took over that post when he was elected president of the newly convened city council on November 24, 2009 by a 5-4 vote, replacing previous council president Carole Smitherman. Because the office of mayor was vacant at the time because of the criminal conviction of Larry Langford, Royal automatically became mayor.[1]

Royal is not among those running in a special election for mayor in December 2009.
