A proprotor is a spinning airfoil that is used as both an airplane style propeller and a helicopter style rotor during the same flight.[1]

This is accomplished by either changing the angle of attack from around zero degrees to around ninety degrees of the wing it is attached to (on a Tiltwing aircraft) or just the rotor hub and possibly engine that drives it (on a Tiltrotor).
