Wikipedia:Changing username/SUL

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Cutter (talk | contribs) at 10:24, 5 November 2009 (CutterX → Cutter). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

This page was a temporary forum for the processing of username changes that related to the migration to single unified login (SUL) between June 2008 and April 2010. Prior to this, it served as a holding pen for requests that could not be completed due to bugs in the SUL renaming process.

Instructions

For the instructions that were in use at the time this page was closed to new requests, see Wikipedia:Changing username/SUL/Front matter/Instructions

Notes

  • When the rename has been completed, your account will have been renamed, and any contributions you have made (including deleted contributions) will be reattributed to your new account as a background process. Your account preferences, watchlist contents, password, etc. will all be preserved, and your user and user talk pages will have been moved to the new name.
Note: The process responsible for reallocating old contributions is currently dependent upon the job queue mechanism. As such, you may find old contributions do not immediately appear under your new account; this is perfectly normal. Updates should take at most a day to complete, although the length of time will vary according to the size of the job queue on this wiki, and the status of the server processes which process this queue.
  • The change will appear in the user rename log and the request will be moved to the archives in the interest of transparency. It is not possible to rename accounts without an entry being created in the log.
  • This change will not affect signatures you have already left on talk pages, or other places where you signed your username with ~~~~. Those pages will continue to display your signature (including the link to your old username) unless edited manually.
  • Be aware: Once you have been renamed, your old account will no longer exist and may potentially be recreated by a third party. This is true even if your old account pages have been redirected towards your new account. To guard against impersonation, you may wish to recreate the old account yourself.

A few users have agreed to provide assistance with the mechanics of this process. If you wish to assist as well, please read the linked page carefully.

This is an odd situation. I am sure I registered an account on the English Wikipedia, probably even before I started with the Vietnamese Wikipedia, Wikisource and Wiktionary, but I don't seem to have the password for en.wikipedia.org. Neither do I receive a new password when I request it. So I am unsure if I messed up the original registration (lost the details, supplied a wrong/obsolete email address or put a typo in it), or whether this is actually someone else's account. I've wanted on quite a few occasions to edit pages on the English Wikipedia, but each time haven't been able to login successfully, and haven't had enough concentration-time to follow this procedure through. (Note: I have M.E., similar to M.S., so my participation is intermittent, but I do whatever I can. Right now, I'd like to do some editing. ;) I've just joined Usability and Prototype, and I'm enjoying the browser test process. I also want to see if I can break the beta with Vietnamese: it's a test case for Unicode support. And I don't know how long this particular "clear patch" of concentration will last, so I want to do as much as I can ASAP. Apart from that, there's no rush and everything is fine. :D )

I notice that the "Clytie" account on en.wikipedia.org has no edits or pages, which, if it is my account, means I must have lost the password. But I hope it also means that if the account does belong to someone else, I won't be interfering with their work by requesting that username. I also have the username "Clytie" in a large number of other wikis and CMS online, not to mention fora, software-development portals and throughout the free-software translation arena, so a great many people expect "Clytie" to be me. It's a very unusual name (my real name), and has become associated with my work, especially in volunteer translation and mentoring.

So I'd really like to have "Clytie" as my SUL (which seems to be OK), but also to be able to use it in en.wikipedia.org, and across the Wikimedia meta-domain. Is that doable and reasonable?

My SUL creation process is paused at the point where I can't find the correct password for "Clytie" on en.wikipedia.org, but the rest of my Wikimedia accounts (home wiki vi.wikisource.org, due to my free-software licence translations) are ready to unify. I'm not sure if I should go ahead, or wait until this issue is resolved. Please advise – and thankyou for your help with this. (I imagine it's not a particularly stress-free and rewarding task.) :) 118.210.126.241 (talk) 09:15, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, the quadruple tilde doesn't show who I am, because I can't login to the account I think I have, and I don't know if it's a good idea to create another account I may not go on using. I don't like just being an IP, especially because my ISP rotates its IPs. How do I show that this is definitely me? :/

Clerk note: - Please make a note (in English) on your userpage on your home wiki that this is actually you; however, usurpations and username changes cannot be made to or from an IP address; you should register a "throwaway" account (it will be nullified after the change is complete) and make the request. Intelligentsiumreview 02:54, 18 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Intelligentsium, thanks for the suggestions. I've created the temporary account (Clytie_temp), and a bilingual userpage (Clytie) at Wiktionary-vi. I hope this helps. :) Clytie temp (talk) 06:19, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, please. I have evidently lost the password for Clytie @ en.wikipedia.org, and want to include it in my SUL Clytie (based on Clytie @ vi.wikisource.org). Once moved, will Clytie @ en.wikipedia.org have the same password as Clytie_temp? Clytie temp (talk) 06:47, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
