MAXQDA is one of the world's leading software programs for computer-assisted qualitive data and text analysis, created and distributed by VERBI GmbH. VERBI designed the software for both qualitative and quantitative research (mixed methods research) in academic, scientific, and business institutions. One distinguishing characteristic of the program is the intuitive four-window interface. MAXQDA 2007 is the latest member of the MAX program family, which was first made available in 1989.
Products
The basic version of MAXQDA 2007 offers all the necessary features for a state-of-the-art analysis of qualitative data. It also contains the powerful graphics tool MAXMaps as a fully-integrated component. MAXQDAplus 2007 is the extended version, which includes the add-on software MAXDictio for quantitative lexical analysis.
History
1989
- Udo Kuckartz, professor for empirical educational science at the Marburg University, authors the program and various books on computer-based qualitaitve research.
- First version released under the name MAX for the DOS Windows System.
1994
- New version WinMAX switches to the Windows platform.
- Continuous upgrades follow, enhancing functionality with visualization options (e.g. the display of coding strips).
2001
- New version MAXqda equipped to work with the .rtf format, and a new dictonary-based tool MAXDictio becomes available.
2004
- MAXqda 2 offers many new features, including elaborate visual tools Code-Matrix-Browser and Code-Relations-Browswer for data representation.
2005
- Add-on module MAXMaps for graphical and content interpretation released.
2007
- The latest version MAXQDA 2007 is optimized for all parts of the research process; new features, such as the TextPortrait, the Codeliner, and the Text-Comparison-Chart, offer new insights into the data and supply the researcher with the necessary tools for methodological innovations.
2008
- Extensive licensing reform gives users a high range of flexibility. Single-user, network and portable licenses (on a USB Flash drive) are now available.
- MAXQDA is the first QDA software to integrate geo-references.
Special features of MAXQDA 2007
- Teamwork function allows one to create a detailed protocol of all operations performed by each team member
- All data is stored in one .mx3 file
- Text retrieval tool fx manager view offers complex retrieval functions
- Memos can be used to document all ideas and insights that come up while working on the text and can be easily organized with the Memo System view
- MAXMaps view and other program functions, like the TextPortait view, the Code-Matrix-Browser view, the Code-Relations-Browser view, the Codeliner and the Text-Comparison-Chart view offer a wide range of options for data visualization
Description: 10 Steps from Interview to Coding
- (1) Record single/group/focus interview(s) with a digital recorder (e.g. Olympus DS-30) and transfer them onto a computer.
- (2) Install the free transcription software F4 audiotranscription See also and load the relevant interview file (automatic rewind function and time "stamps" can be set by the researcher).
- (3) Start the transcription, controlling it with the F4 key or the USB-Footswitch f-pro.
- (4) Save the transcript as an .rtf file (rich text format).
- (5) Open MAXQDA and import the text files by choosing the function Import Text(s) (all time stamps will be visible in the text).
- (6) Now you can open one of the texts (double-click) and start working on it.
- (7) To hear the orginal audio file again click on a time stamp in the MAXQDA Text Browser, and the audio file will play that segment (Note: you need to keep F4 open in the backround).
- (8) If you want to code a text segment, just highlight it, press CTRL+W to create a new code, choose the code color, and type in a defintion as a Code Memo (comparable to a post-it note to the code).
- (9) All coded phrases are visualized with color bars using the color assigned by the researcher; if an interesting idea comes up while coding, you can insert it right next to the text in a memo.
- (10) If you want to read through a specific selection of your coded phrases, just ACTIVATE (right mouse click) the specific code(s) and text(s) (e.g. to see what an interviewee says about your code political changes). The result is shown in the Retrieved Segments window.
