MAXQDA is one of the world leading software developers for computer-assisted qualitive data analysis (QDA) research and text analysis. MAXQDA is an expert in delevoping QDA software products for qualitative and quantitative research (mixed methods research) in sciences and pubilic or privat institutions. The key note is the easy and clever management of the program. Actually, MAXQDA 2007 is the latest member of the MAX program family that belongs to handful of pioneer programs which have given qualitative researchers a computer-based tool to analyize their data in a very comfortable way.
Products
The basic version of MAXQDA 2007 already offers comfortable features for a state-of-the-art analysis of qualitative data. It contains the powerful graphics tool MAXMaps as a fully integrated component.

History
- Udo Kuckartz, professor for empirical educational science at the Marburg University, is the author of the program and multiplicity literature on computer-based qualitaitve research
- the first version was released in 1989 under the name MAX for the DOS Windows System
- in 1994 the program switches from DOS to the Windows platform and WinMAX became of MAX
- in the next time continuous upgrades followed and enhanced the functions of the software that now contains also visualization functions (e.g. the display of coding strips)
- since 2001 the program works with the .rtf format and changed the name to MAXQDA and the new dictonary based tool MAXDictio appeared
- with the new version MAXQDA 2 in 2004 some elaborate visual tools for data representation were offered for the first time: the Code-Matrix-Browser and the Code-Relations-Browser, furthermore, a number of new functions became avaible such as the export for HTML File Format
- one year later the add-on module MAXMaps for graphical and content interpretation was released
- the latest version MAXQDA 2007 was optimized for all parts of the research process on qualitaitve data; new features like the TextPortrait, the Codeliner and the Text-Comparison-Chart offers new insigthts into the data and supply the researcher with the high potential for methodological innovations, the MAXQDA Visual Tools are second to none within the spectrum of QDA software
- in 2008 an extensive licensing reform gives the users a high range of flexibility through the purchase of single-user, network and portable licenses (e.g. Avaibility of MAXQDA for each PC by USB Flash drive)
- MAXQDA became the first software for qualitaitve text analysis that integrate geo-references
Theoretical Background

Description: 10 Steps from Interview to Coding
- Recording single/group/focus interview(s) with a digital recorder (e.g. Olympus DS-30) and transfer them onto a computer
- intstalling a free transcription software F4 audiotranscription and load the relevant interview file, automatic rewind function and time "stamps" can be set by the researcher
- starting the transcription, control it with F4 key or more easily plug in the USB-Footswitch f-pro and start typing
- save the transcript as an .rtf file (rich text format)
- opening MAXQDA and import the text files by choosing the function Import Text(s), all time stamps will be visible in the text
- after that the text can be open (in the window Document System) and working on the text (in the window Text Browser) starts
- to hear the orginal audio file again click on a time stamp in the MAXQDA Text Browser and the audio file will play that segment (with the therefor opened software F4 in the backround)
- to code a text segment, a word, a letter or a semantic sign just highlight them, press CTRL+W to create a new code in your Code System, choose the code color and type a defintion as a Code Memo (comparable to a post-it note to the code)
- all coded phrases are visualized with color bars using the color assigned by the researcher; for cleaving interesting ideas that comes up while coding, these can be insert right next to text in a post-it note memo
- to read through a specific selection of your coded phrases again, ACTIVATE (right mouse click) the specific code(s) and text(s) (e.g. you want to see what an interviewee says about your code political changes), a potential result will be shown in the window Retrieved Segments
