THE LATIMER GROUP

The Latimer Group [1] is a communications coaching firm based in the State of Connecticut.

HISTORY

The Latimer Group (TLG) was founded in 2002 and opened for business on January 1, 2003, in Wallingford, CT [2] by Dean M. Brenner, with a clear mission of coaching clients towards more powerful communication skills. The creation and design of the firm was based on Brenner’s experiences in a variety of industries, and his belief that as the world becomes more complicated, the need for clear and persuasive communication skills will be increasingly required for success. TLG embraces a realistic view of 21st century business, and focuses exclusively on coaching public speaking, presentation and business writing skills for corporate organizations. TLG is named after Latimer Reef Lighthouse [3] , which is located 1 mile NorthWest of East Point on Fisher’s Island, NY. Brenner grew up in Watch Hill, RI [4] and learned to race sailboats in Fisher’s Island Sound. Brenner chose the name not only because of his childhood connection to the area, but because of his belief that great communication skills can provide clarity and direction in moments of great professional stress.

FOUNDER

Brenner has coached executives, sales teams, leaders, managers and technical experts in a wide range of industries on both the art and the science of persuasive communication. Brenner has served as the speechwriter for senior executives, has crafted strategic message plans with senior leadership, and has coached front line professionals on how to present and communicate in ways that are both powerful and enhance their organization’s brand. Brenner is a published author, and his first title, Move the World: Persuade Your Audience, Change Minds and Achieve Your Goals was published in 2007 by John Wiley & Sons. He is also a popular keynote speaker, presenting on topics ranging from leadership and persuasive communication to team dynamics and high performance. Brenner has taught The Latimer Group’s methodologies and concepts on six continents, and traveled to more than 20 countries. He has raced Olympic sailboats in 15 countries, has studied as a graduate student in Europe, and has marched as Team Leader in the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Brenner is known for his vision and leadership skills as chairman of the US Olympic Sailing Program [5] . He was appointed to lead the program on a part-time volunteer basis in 2005 to see the team through to the 2008 Games. Since that time, he has led the organization through a period of great change – the funded budget has increased more than 300%, and the national program has been thoroughly re-energized. In addition to his role as Chairman, he was also asked to serve as Team Leader for the 2008 Olympic Sailing Team, which returned home from Beijing with Gold and Silver medals. Based on the overall success of the program, he was appointed by the US Sailing Board of Directors [6] to a second term as Chair through 2012. Brenner is a well-decorated Olympic-caliber sailor, with seven national and North American championships and five international team racing championships to his credit. He was a member of the US National Sailing Team for three years, and placed second in the 2000 US Olympic Selection Trials. Prior to founding TLG, Brenner served as a financial adviser with UBS Financial Services in Hartford where he co-managed more than $700million of private client assets, and as a consultant with The Clarion Group, located in West Hartford, CT. For his formal education, Brenner earned an MBA in Finance from The Olin School of Business at Babson College, and an MA in Shakespearian Literature from the University of Warwick, England. He also holds a BA in English Literature and Government from Georgetown University. Prior to Georgetown, he attended The Kent School in Kent, CT.

BUSINESSES

TLG divides its business into four areas: Training, Coaching, Specialized Services and Keynote Speaking. The Training business consists of a variety of workshops on speaking and writing. The workshops range from general “knowledge transfers” opportunities for large groups of people in a classroom-style setting, to highly customized “skill development” opportunities for small groups. The Coaching business consists of specific skill development, highly customized to the needs of the individual. Typical engagements include preparation for an important speech or presentation, preparation of a critical piece of business writing. Specialized Services include Strategic Message Development, Speech Writing, or Crisis Communication Planning. Keynote Presentations are given by Brenner and he speaks on a variety of topics including leadership, team-building and teamwork, and business performance. All of his Presentations draw from all aspects of his background, including his experiences as a world-class athlete and team leader at the Olympic Games.
